Anyone who uses Skype has consented to the company reading everything they write. The H's associates in Germany at Heise Security have now discovered that the Microsoft subsidiary does in fact make use of this privilege in practice.

Comment Thanks to Kim Dotcom? (Score 1) 656

Thanks to Kim Dotcom? I'd say it's more appropriate to say it's thanks to the internet as a whole. It doesn't matter where it was uploaded, the people that downloaded it in the first 2 days knew about it long before its release. If anything this is yet another misleading headline to make him look like he's doing something illegal, which he isn't.

Submission + - Apple Applies for Patent on Battery with Rounded Corners (businessweek.com)

cervesaebraciator writes: From TFA: "Apple said in the application that a curved battery pack can use the area outside of the rectangular space ordinarily reserved for such an energy source. A curved battery could occupy space that is “curved, rounded, or irregularly shaped,” the Cupertino, California-based company said. That could allow designs for devices to diverge from the standard rectangular configuration." The application describes the process thus: "The [layers of cathodes, separators, and anodes] may be wound to create a jelly roll prior to sealing the layers in the flexible pouch. A curve may also be formed in the battery cell by applying a pressure of at least 0.13 kilogram-force (kgf) per square millimeter to the layers using a set of curved plates applying a temperature of about 85.degree. C. to the layers."

Submission + - Are some of north korea's long-range missiles fakes? (npr.org)

gbrumfiel writes: North Korea has not been shy in announcing plans to destroy the United States, but questions remain over whether it has the nukes or the missiles to do so. Now NPR reports on open-source intelligence showing that one of the North's most "advanced" weapons might actually be a decoy. Six KN-08 missiles were paraded last year, but each showed differences in the way they were assembled. Is it all a bluff? Or are the missiles part of a real program?

Submission + - Wii U GamePad Plus: Could It Be Coming? (goozernation.com)

RyanDJ writes: Ryan Johnson | GoozerNation

Nintendo made an interesting design choice only allowing a single GamePad to be used with the machine at a time. While not everyone has the funds to go out and buy four more pads, it certainly makes one wonder if there was anything else behind the reasoning. Nintendo has a habit of upgrading their equipment, most notably with the recent WiiMotionPlus. Could we see a GamePad Plus in the Wii U's future?
