Submission + - What unneeded 3rd party stuff lurks in Windows? 1

pcause writes: This story about a bug in a Macrovision DRM driver in Windows, raises a bigger question:
  • what other third party code for DRM or other such functions is included/hidden in the shipped versions of Windows?

I am willing to concede that Microsoft can ship pretty much anything of their own in Windows(even stuff I kind of dislike), but I don't think they should bury this kind of third party stuff in Windows. Drivers for hardware are one thing, but this isn't hardware support.

Microsoft should have to disclose this non-MS, non-hardware stuff and allow a user to opt out?

Submission + - Great Automotive application of Linux

Shivetya writes: "Ever wanted to know whats going on in your car beyond what the automaker lets you see through the dashboard indicators and idiot lights? Well there is a new option, DashDAQ, which hooks into your cars diagnostic connectors and reveals information about your cars performance in real-time. It is Linux drive with some sites claiming it is open-source, though I can't find that actual quote on the product page, and allows for attaching of Linux based GPS units as well. Looks really sharp and it recently took home nine awards at SEMA. Get a jump on the story at Autoblog http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/06/sema-2007-revisiting-the-dashdaq/ and see the product page at http://www.dashdaq.com/index.html"

Submission + - Yahoo on Congressional Hot Seat (nytimes.com)

Richard Silverstein writes: "Congress put Yahoo's Jerry Yang on the hot seat for the company's complicity in the arrest and imprisonment of Chinese pro-democracy journalist, Shi Tao, currently serving 10 years in prison:

"While technologically and financially you are giants, morally you are pygmies," Tom Lantos, Democrat of California and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said angrily after hearing from the two executives, Jerry Yang, the chief executive, and Michael J. Callahan, the general counsel... Mr. Lantos angrily urged the two men to apologize to the journalist's mother, who was sitting directly behind them. Mr. Yang and Mr. Callahan turned around from the witness table and bowed from their seats to Mr. Shi's mother, Gao Qinsheng, who bowed in return and then began to weep.
Yahoo responded to a Chinese supeona by providing identifying information allowing Chinese authorities to track down Mr. Shi."

Submission + - Firefly Serenity sequel a possibility? (sffmedia.com)

bowman9991 writes: "Sequel to Serenity finally happening? Fantastic if true. Reports suggest there is a chance of a direct to DVD sequel to Serenity, the film that followed on from where the television show Firefly left off. Alan Tudyk, the actor who played the the ship's pilot, Hoban Washburne, said that the newly released "Serenity: Special Edition" DVD has been selling so well Universal is talking about doing another movie. Hopefully this time for real!"

Submission + - File-shrinking brings its own huge rewards

BuhDuh writes: "As an expatriot Scot living in the US, it's good to see that the spirit of the Celtic race as the worlds greatest tinker(ers) is alive and kicking. According to this story in the Glasgow Herald 'a self-confessed computer nerd' developed an algorithm for dramatically reducing the size of pdf files without reducing quality. The article also goes on to say that he turned down an offer from Microsoft before establishing his company Crisp Documents and that they are now in negotiation with an un-named 'major US technology company', presumably to expand from the UK. Noting the dreaded .info domain, but knowing that the Herald is a quality broadsheet, I wonder if we are being stung, as he states was the fear he had when turning down the Microsoft offer?"

It could even lead to tailoring of computers to even more specific demographics, like a student laptop preloaded with word processor, email and an IM all available at the press of a button.

Submission + - Cancer breakthrough invented in garage in Florida (wkyc.com) 1

Provocateur writes: "A former radio engineer has invented a device that could possibly kill cancer cells with radio waves — in his garage. He is a cancer patient himself. This ham radio operator had an idea in the middle of the night. This inspiring story has it all for /. fans: the motivation, the garage, the hacking together of hardware and kitchen utensils, and initial testing on hotdogs — what's not to like?"
