For a potential medical school student, it doesn't matter if they can get a residency or not. They would certainly prefer one, but until you've gone through 2 years of basic sciences and 2 years of clinical internship, passed USMLE step 1 and 2, and graduated, it fuckall matters not.

In Arizona, Florida, Washington, Missouri, Utah and Arkansas you can get a provisional license and work under supervision of another physician, without ever having gone through a residency.
