Submission + - NASA and ESA to communicate with lunar orbiter using lasers (gizmag.com)

cylonlover writes: Space communications have relied on radio since the first Sputnik in 1957. It’s a mature, reliable technology, but it’s reaching its limits. The amount of data sent has increased exponentially for decades and NASA expects the trend to continue. The current communications systems are reaching their limits, so NASA and ESA are going beyond radio as a solution. As part of this effort, ESA has finished tests of part of a new communications system, in preparations for a demonstration in October in which it will receive a laser data download from a NASA lunar orbiter.

Submission + - Climate Change Claims Its First US Victim In Kivalina, Alaska (ibtimes.com)

Rebecka writes: While many fear areas in states such as California and New York will one day be completely underwater, the small town of Kivalina, Ala., is set to be the first landmass on American soil to be overtaken by climate change. According to a new report, the village, located 1,000 miles from the state’s capital of Anchorage, is expected to be succumb to its watery surroundings by the year 2025.

Two decades of warming ocean waters and the subsequent melting of Arctic ice, has resulted in the small Alaskan village, located on a spit of sand adjacent to the Bering Sea, vulnerable to storms. According to a report from BBC, Kivalina’s shoreline has noticeably narrowed over the past two decades, causing U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to estimate that the land will become inhabitable in as little as 12 years.

CO2 alarmists pointing to Venus as a warning seem to forget that it is much closer to that big furnace, and that its composition, among other parameters, is widely different.
Fearing that earth could shortly turn into Venus is as silly as fearing that it would become a second Jupiter.

It doesn't have to be that scenario to be a big problem. just the melting of all the ice on earth alone would be a 70 meter problem.

those conscripts in most cases did not have other options (economic pressure/peer pressure/stupidity(see below)/...). in WWI and WWII desertion = penalty of death.
and national pride ? That's a new means of keeping people stupid (following in the footsteps of religion : 'us' vs. 'them')
