Journal Journal: AMD Considers New York FAB Facility

AMD has signed a Grant Disbursement Agreement (GDA) with the State of New York. The GDA establishes a two-year window from July 2007 to July 2009 in which AMD can choose to initiate the building of a new state of the art 300mm wafer fabrication facility in Saratoga County, NY. "If conditions become right for AMD to move forward, construction would begin sometime between July 2007 and July 2009. Similar to AMD's othe

Submission + - Earthquake disrupts data and phone service in Asia

An anonymous reader writes: Bloomberg reports that Taiwan earthquakes damaged undersea cables serving Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Phone and data services in Asia are affected, and repairs could take from a few weeks to months. News are still limited. My calls from the US to Taiwan have been unsuccessful. Taiwan TV channels seem to be working fine, and the 7.2, 6.4, and 5.2 earthquakes appear to have affected the South of Taiwan to a much lesser degree than the 1999 earthquake.

Submission + - The Death of Habeas Corpus

Jack Schitt writes: I know this may be from October 18, 2006, but I never saw it anywhere other than this MSNBC broadcast on YouTube.

Forget the DMCA.

Forget the PATRIOT Act.

Habeas Corpus, the legal action or writ by means of which detainees can seek relief from unlawful imprisonment, can now be blocked if the Feds decide for whatever reason (including classified reasons) to call you an enemy combatant. In other words, if you decide to protest some aspect of the US Government and manage to get their attention, they now have a legal loophole which allows them to arrest and detain you indefinitely without your ability to challenge it and without charges being filed.

I should move to China. At least they give you the illusion of being able to fight your detainment.

See the open statement to president Bush by MSNBC's Kieth Olbermann.

Attention US Government: I have no intention of harming the US or it's citizens at any point, either now or in the future. It's not worth the gas money to come and arrest me. Have a nice day.

Submission + - Tell the new MA governor how you feel about ODF

Blob Pet writes: To the surprise of some, it was recently reported that Massachusetts governor-elect Deval Patrick named Microsoft's anti-ODF lobbyist Brian Burke to the technology advisory group of his transition team. Well now that same transition team is soliciting comments from the masses on their website on what policies the new administration should make. It would appear to be an excellent opportunity to express your thoughts on how the Commonwealth should or shouldn't take advantage of technology such as ODF, especially if you're a Massachusetts resident.

Submission + - DIY Home Security Camera

DelawareGT writes: I live in a rather unsavory part of Atlanta and recently my house was robbed (roomie's laptop near an easily breakable window). The landlord is taking care of adding security bars but I want to do something more. I was wondering if anyone out there has any cheap DIY home video surveillance solutions. I have a linux box that I can dedicate to this, but considering that it might be stolen one day, I'd like to be able to upload video to the net.
