I'm thinking OBL may have been mutilated then shot from very close range so pictures would help. I didn't like his beliefs or methods and I suppose dying would have been his choice. The spin on his killing was dishonorable though. He fought corruption and lost and if we don't see it that way then all the death and suffering he caused is for nothing.

Programming

Submission + - Last surviving ENIAC programmer has died. (nytimes.com)

fatherjoecode writes: "Jean Bartik passed away on 4 April 2011. She "was the last surviving member of the group of women who programmed the Eniac, ..., which is credited as the first all-electronic digital computer". For must of my life I was mistaken in the belief that the films of the woman who turned the dials of ENIAC were following programming instructions from someone else. It turns these women were the programmers and their contributions went unrecognized for many decades."

Yes me too. I thought that it would be free online. I guess he is just making a point and maybe expecting $ to boot. I'm a little curious what RMS thinks about IP in general and his place in the world but not buy his book curious.

User Journal

Journal Journal: the new slashdot

I've been reading /. since 97, I had an account but I never used it and then changed jobs and lost it but people wrote smart stuff here. So along comes the 2011 interface and now it's unreadable if I don't sign in. What a stupid change. So now I have an account and mod points and /. is a chore. I had no idea! The spam at 0 is unbearable and moderation is work.

Comment Spyware vs cookies (Score 4, Informative) 115

I just read the proposal and it's purpose, as far as cookies go, is to make spyware illegal to comply with an EU directive. The discussion centers around how to do this without requiring an opt-in for every cookie because cookies are also used to spy on you.

Third party cookies should be illegal but I very much doubt that this proposal wants to go there.
