Comment Re:Father of the computer science ? (Score 1) 230

"[Computer science] is not really about computers -- and it's not about computers in the same sense that physics is not really about particle accelerators, and biology is not about microscopes and Petri dishes...and geometry isn't really about using surveying instruments. Now the reason that we think computer science is about computers is pretty much the same reason that the Egyptians thought geometry was about surveying instruments: when some field is just getting started and you don't really understand it very well, it's very easy to confuse the essence of what you're doing with the tools that you use."

Didja not even read the fine summary? I can see your accident thing, kind of. But it's a half dozen risk factors, only cancer doesn't change.

You would expect diabetes to be higher in sedentary occupations, because Bob knows that a lot of office workers are fat bastards.

"Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. "

I've gone for 7W LED spotlights to replace the 50W GU10 halogen thingys. All good so far here; but check with one bulb for colour and dispersion angle though before you shell out for all the fixtures. I like mine whiter, but some people don't, and the spots are close enough together that beam angle doesn't matter too much here.

No - they're looking for reasons not to believe it. First, it wasn't happening. Then we cycled through a whole bunch of variables (solar output, etc) which don't explain it. Then we had the "it's happened forever". Yes, but not this quickly. Most of these alternate hypotheses don't bear a couple minutes scrutiny. You're late to the party. The "controversy" happened in the mid to late 80s. The theory has only been gathering evidence since then, and nothing has really come along to disprove it. You say it's raining, but you're pissing down my back.

We had a similar incident when some poor bloke sent his CV to foobar@barfoo.co,uk - note the comma instead of a full stop. Turns out "uk" expanded to our UK employees and the other part got discarded as undeliverable.

Lessons are I guess: don't send CVs from your work email, and don't have email aliases which are close to elements of email addresses.
