Slashdot is about free speech.
Free Speech is about letting people talk, not acknowledging any retard opinion backed by counterfactual, flawed, aging arguments who feel like a repost of a repost just because you posted it.
You can voice your opinion as much as you like here, just don't expect people to agree with you just because you're saying something, and don't expect either that people will let you say something and not respond if they think you're wrong.
Or to make this shorter : You're entitled to your own opinion, and the right to voice it, not your own facts and the priviledge to be praised whether you're right or wrong.

So what if it is mainly copyrighted material ?
Most people use their car to go much faster than the speed limit, should we ban cars altogether ?
Some people use MSN and mobile phones to plan bank robberies or murder, should we ban those to ?
And more to the point : it's not because it is legal that it is good and vice and versa. Not so long ago in a country not that far away it was illegal to harbor Jews in your house.

Actually they were doing fine up until they lost 100,000 soldiers dead, and 4 times this captured/injured.
The casualties the French army suffered in the 40 days of the blitzkrieg were superior to all the casualties the US forces suffered in Europe for example.
The french army surrendered because they had been crushed by a strategy (quite vile) that they had not anticipated : Germany going through Belgium and the Netherlands which was supposed to be "illegal". Fun fact though : It was the 2nd FUCKING time Germany pulled this trick... cf. WWI.
Anyway, the French (and British, because to be fair Chamberlain is greatly to blame for this chickenning out) lost the war in 1938, the day they decided to let Germany invade Austria, instead of crushing while they still could. 2 years of intensive military production later, the balance of forces was inverse.

I wouldn't say more important, I would say it is a more immediate need, but human society only progresses by satisfying less urgent needs.
It is because we have poets and theoretical physicists and mathematicians that we are who we are today. Without this ability to nurture "useless" people we would be apes, eating, fighting, shitting and fucking. that's all we "need".

I do not think it is correct to say that education is a problem of bad or good parenting.
Of course it would be ideal that every parent educates their child perfectly, stimulate their reflections and show them the wonders of the world, but that is wishful thinking.
The reality is right now that most parents do not have the time nor the knowledge or the ability to educate their children.
Provided that we agree on this, the role of public education is to compensate this by giving all children an appropriate background to learn and think about the world on their own, and participate actively in public life.
You create high quality parents, like you say, by providing high quality public education to the childrens of today who will become the parents of tomorrow. You can't start by postulating that we need to "maintain high quality parents" because right now a huge majority of parents are incapable of providing education to their children.
Yes we need to help today's parents educate their children but for that we have to give them time, knowledge, support, and financial security.

I don't think most women would drop their jobs and stay at home given the choice for example.
A lot of Jobs suck, but most people find (some sort of) gratification by working.
If you gave me a hundred million dollars right now, I'd probably do crazy shit for a year, but then I'd go back to doing something useful, probably start a company and work.

... Whether you like it or not every dime you spend is politically significant, even when it is not politically motivated.
If you bought Nike's Shoes in the 90s you validated the idea that it is OK to make 8 years old boys from the phillipines work 14 hours a day for $1 to make shoes. Maybe you didn't care, maybe you didn't even know, maybe you thought it was a great idea or that it was the will of God or the free market, but in ANY case your money was given to Nike and to them (and to the rest of the market, and to the politician and the general public) it meant : FUCK YEAH keep doing it !
Now there are 2 simple ways to act after you realized this :
A] You can keep bitching about how you're not politically motivated (I mean WTF ? do you even know what it means ? politically motivated = motivated by the concern over the life of the community, that literally is what it means... How can you not give a fuck about the life of your community ? how can one be so brainwashed that he would think that to be concerned about others is bad ?)
Or B] you can deal with it and learn to be a grown man responsible for your actions.

Did you read what I replied to that guy ?
I wouldn't buy an ATV2 for the exact same reason I wouldn't buy a roku, that validates the idea of Apple (and Roku) that it's better to sell a closed device.
Every single buck you spend is a vote, and the money you spend during the 4 years between each brief period of time during which you pretend to give a fuck about the world, and coincidentally choose a puppet to place in the white house, has much more influence of the world than the ballot you cast to choose the puppet.
But yes of course if I had to choose between 2 evils I'd definitely go for the ATV2+XBMC over the Roku + hypothetical XBMC maybe someday.

You're not merely a consumer... Lol.
