40 years is long enough to live. Back in the good old days, you were lucky to live to be 36. People were not naturally designed to live these long lives that we see today. Living today, in the political climate that we do it is easy to say he was a hero. I wonder what percentage of people here would have been calling him a fagot, and want him locked up for his crimes if this were 1950. I am guessing it would be close to 98%.
