Nmap 5.20 Released 36

ruphus13 writes "Nmap has a new release out, and it's a major one. It includes a GUI front-end called Zenmap, and, according to the post, 'Network admins will no doubt be excited to learn that Nmap is now ready to identify Snow Leopard systems, Android Linux smartphones, and Chumbies, among other OSes that Nmap can now identify. This release also brings an additional 31 Nmap Scripting Engine scripts, bringing the total collection up to 80 pre-written scripts for Nmap. The scripts include X11 access checks to see if X.org on a system allows remote access, a script to retrieve and print an SSL certificate, and a script designed to see whether a host is serving malware. Nmap also comes with netcat and Ndiff. Source code and binaries are available from the Nmap site, including RPMs for x86 and x86_64 systems, and binaries for Windows and Mac OS X. '"

Astrium Hopes To Test Grabbing Solar Energy From Orbit 144

goldaryn writes "Word from the BBC today is that Europe's biggest space company is seeking partners to help get a satellite-based solar power trial into orbit: 'EADS Astrium says the satellite system would collect the Sun's energy and transmit it to Earth via an infrared laser, to provide electricity. Space solar power has been talked about for more than 30 years as an attractive concept because it would be 'clean, inexhaustible, and available 24 hours a day.' However, there have always been question marks over its cost, efficiency and safety. But Astrium believes the technology is close to proving its maturity.'"

Not just that but excessive neuronal activity is highly inefficient. There's evidence that even within specialized tasks, such as visual and auditory perception, the brain is trying to minimize the number of neurons firing (see work pertaining to sparse decomposition in neural activity such as some of the research done here: https://redwood.berkeley.edu/). Still, I don't think that %10 is a good number to quote, even for instantaneous usage. Very, very little is actually known about the brain aside from rather weak correlations.

Comment Re:Useful? (Score 1) 478

For every gene, there is an enzyme that actually expresses that gene. DNA itself does nothing, it's the expression of the DNA that makes cells develop etc. By blocking the enzymes that express the genes, the genes themselves get suppressed. So it's all about the enzymes that exist in the cell.
