Comment The Aftereffect? (Score 1, Interesting) 544

If I remember correctly, my credit card bounces into "crap customer mode" when certain activity like overcharges (or nonpayment) occur. This ups my interest rate permanently from 6% to something silly like 20%.

If this happens, I wonder how many people will be relieved to have the charges reversed, only to be upset next month when their rate is hiked.

Great point. Nobody has problems with malware on their machines anymore. "Oh I only get a few pop ups." "Oh, there were 30 viruses on there last week but I cleaned them out." Then they fail to connect the dots and try to sue Paypal because somebody "hacked" their account.

The smartest move on Malware authors' parts were to make the malware invisible and never "harm" the PC.

Now erase a peasant's hard drive and throw some Michelangelo artwork in their face, and "OMFG I HAVE A VIRUS! I heard about these on TV!"

In a sick way, this is a win for the PC community as a whole. Erased hard drives stolen records & botnets.

So we hate the guy for following the rules online and writing a research paper about it, right?

And we also hate those guys who did the speed limit and posted a video about it a couple of weeks ago, right?

It may be considered trolling, but there is honest to goodness research in this realm inside and outside gaming. Questions need to be answered concerning basic intelligence (Did we forget the rules/laws?), ethics (Why are we punishing people that choose to follow them?), and self reflection (Are your extreme actions validated by abusing accused "trolls" who did significantly less damage than yourself?)

I'd say the professor should read the comments on Slashdot and take them into consideration in his next research paper.

I think you're absolutely right. The clue is right in the article as well... "Google intends to ship its browser with support for both codecs, which means that Apple is the only vendor that will not be supporting Ogg." I wouldn't be surprised if a few years from now you can post a slew of different video types on your site, without even the need to specify the codec in your code (browser could detect it).

2 to 5 minute ad breaks = I walk to the kitchen to make a snack, or record and watch later to fast forward through junk. 30 second ad breaks = Not a big deal. I chill out and take in the advertisements. Same thing with internet banner ads. I didn't look for an ad blocker until people got greedy and littered their sites with junk.
