94 New Species Described By CA Academy of Sciences 52

An anonymous reader writes "Researchers at the California Academy of Sciences traversed four continents and two oceans to uncover 94 new species in 2009, proving that while sometimes in this digital age the world can feel like a small place, much of it has yet to be explored. Among the 94 discoveries were 65 arthropods, 14 plants, 8 fishes, 5 sea slugs, one coral, and one fossil mammal. Why does it matter? As Dr. David Mindell, Dean of Science and Research Collections at the Academy, explained, 'Humans rely on healthy ecosystems, made up of organisms and their environments. Creating a comprehensive inventory of life on our planet is critical for understanding and managing resources. Yet a great many life-forms remain to be discovered and described.'"

Maybe for some bugs, but for those nasty caca roches, I get a bowl, wipe the top 4 inches around inside with vegtable oil then put whatever inside... coffee grounds, bananas... whatever... There are tons of dead ones in there but that doesn't stop more from coming. Also, cockroaches are cannibals.

And they make a tasty treat for the kids!

If you told me just 1 year ago that steroids could be used to cure cancer rather than cause it, I would have laughed in your face.

There are so many incidences of steroid users succumbing to cancer that it's not uncommon to see American body builders getting checked out in Mexican hospitals for various cancers. If this therapy really works, it is critical to find the balance point between androgenic steroid therapeutic use and outright abuse.

It isn`t the androgen therapy that is doing it, it is the anti-ctla4 antibody that is doing the work.

If anything the androgen therapy should be causing the prostate cancer to grow

This puts the finger squarely on what is wrong. Corporations have no soul.

There is no conscience that you can speak to. They become greed machines that are only interested in profits. To the expense of anything else not the company.

Enron, the savings and loans, this latest fiasco, all of which happened because of the greed mentality. Which precludes acting in anyones benefit, if you can't get a dollar out of it.

Google had the right idea with its "do no harm policy," Even, though many could argue that they haven't followed their own charter. At least, it is in there. I think there should also be a "conscience" position in the company that is equal to, or nearly equal to CEO.
