usually the military hikers are not officially bibbed runners.
so they don't start with the runners and aren't timed.
at the boston marathon this week for instance, i started with the first wave, 3rd corral (so very up front, 3 of 27 corrals) and i passed many military already long hiking. so they must have started long before the official start.
they usually finish far, far, far behind the elite, far behind the serious amateurs, far behind the casual runners, well into the charity runners.

there are military at nearly every marathon with backpacks.
especially the big ones
they hike the course alongside the runners.
i've run 8 marathons (including this years boston marathon) and at 6 of them there were various military hikers. they are always very supportive of the runners and vice versa
this has nothing to do with the bombings.

I don't see how tweeting about the symphony while watching the symphony is a bad thing. you are reflecting on/discussing what is going on around you.
how many people here have regularly attending the symphony? My wife went to IU music, played in symphonies for years, and we have been BSO season ticket holders for years so i speak with some knowledge here.
The symphony does not require full attention.
why do they give you the huge program full of info on the works, the performers, the hall, etc? to give you something to do. check out how many people are flipping thru it during the performance.
we usually zoom out immediately at intermission to grab a few drinks (clearly not a help to sustained attention), after having a few before the show as well.
i can easily listen to a work and pound out a few emails/tweets if i wanted to.
that said, i'm not a fan of many of the contemporary works (legend of zelda, etc). sorry, just not my thing. imho. if it brings others though, no nuts.

Yes, you can wear t-shirts and jeans and stay exactly where you are today.
Dress like an adult. This generally means khakis and a button down shirt or polo shirt.
Sure, sometimes you can slide in jeans, but have nice ones.
No t-shirts. no sandals ever.

i burn 120 calories per mile run and run 8 miles in an hour, thats over 960 calories.
i do this 5 days a week with a 16 mile run on saturday
it is a great way to lose weight
To truly lose weight you have to balance food eaten and exercise

Comment Pointer device vs touchpad vs mouse (Score 1) 101

These types of solutions are problematic.

My mouse use varies quite a bit from my mouse in my office, to my use of the Pointer Device on my ibm laptop to my home laptop with a touchpad. All yield very different mouse actions.

I also don't like these solutions that there are times when you want someone else to access your acct. For example, my brothers bank uses a validation system that measures how you type your password for an additional layer of security. My brother was in a situation where i needed to access his acct. he gave me the username and password but the damn system would not let me in since i type his password at a different cadence/pace/whatever then he does.

these things all suck.

King's Quest Fan Project The Silver Lining Is Back 61

LoTonah writes "After eight years of development and a Cease & Desist from Vivendi, King's Quest fan project The Silver Lining is back in action. From the website: 'We are extremely happy to announce that our project, The Silver Lining, will definitely see the light of day! In a wonderful turn of events, Activision reached out to the Phoenix Online team a few months ago with a desire to revisit their decision regarding The Silver Lining. After negotiations, the C&D has been officially rescinded, and Phoenix Online has been granted a non-commercial license to release The Silver Lining! Our team is ecstatic about this, and as hard as we've worked for eight years, it's the tireless belief and support of you, our fans, that has made this possible.' The first episode of the project is due to be released on July 10."

365 Days of Photojournalism With Stormtroopers 30

Lanxon writes "Wired reports that for one French fan, the Stormtrooper has become an obsession. Stormtroopers 365 is a collection of wacky, witty, and artistic photographs that its creator Stéfan Le Dû has been adding to daily since 3 April 2009 when the project began. 'I got a new camera and I had some Stormtrooper figures sleeping in their blister packs for months. I wanted to start something a bit challenging on Flickr, and I had previously seen some awesome Star Wars toys pictures, and other "365" projects that I really liked,' he says. The two starring Stormtroopers — TK455 and TK479 — have run into cats, clocks, various household implements, and even a DeLorean sports car."
