Submission + - Devs plan open source hardware-software router to beat government snooping (scmagazine.com.au)

mask.of.sanity writes: Four security researchers have designed a router based on open source components they say will make security and privacy verifiable and more accessible to users.

The Open Router Project router would be built on open source hardware and software and run a custom Linux Yocto distribution with a Freescale QorIQ P1010 processor. A list of secure features planned is here.

The devs have opened a $200,000 crowdfunding goal they say will bring the router up to the first manufacturing run.

Submission + - Toyota Announces Plans for Fuel Cell car by 2015 (chron.com)

puddingebola writes: Toyota has announced plans for a fuel cell powered car at the Tokyo Motor show. "Development is going very smoothly," he told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the Tokyo Motor Show. The car will go on sale in Japan in 2015 and within a year later in Europe and U.S." I couldn't find any further details in searches.

Submission + - Getting drunk without alcohol - Star Trek's synthehol is on the way! (bbc.co.uk) 1

MalachiK writes: A senior academic and former UK government drugs adviser reckons that pretty soon it'll be possible to enjoy the fun of being drunk without having to suffer the negative effects of alcohol. In a proposal reminiscent of Star Trek's synthehol, Professor David Nut has identified a number of molecules that he claims offer experiences that are subjectively indistinguishable from alcohol intoxication. Apparently a major advantage of using these more selectively psychoactive drugs is that the effects can be quickly reversed. It's not all good news though as Professor Nut seems to think that the drinks industry is using its financial and political clout to stop this sort of research being undertaken.

Submission + - A second solar system has been detected that's very similar to our own (spaceindustrynews.com) 1

littlesparkvt writes: A team of astrophysicists at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und- Raumfahrt; DLR), together with German and European colleagues, has discovered the most extensive planetary system to date. Seven planets circle the star KOI-351 – more than in other known planetary systems. They are arranged in a similar fashion to the eight planets in the Solar System, with small rocky planets close to the parent star and gas giant planets at greater distances. Although the planetary system around KOI-351 is packed together more tightly, it provides an interesting comparison to our cosmic home.
