Submission + - The Fight to Save MySQL: Monty Widenius Speaks Out (earthweb.com)

jammag writes: MySQL developer Monty Widenius is pessimistic about the database's future under Oracle. In this interview, he essentially describes it as a corporate takeover of an open source project, where it will languish without proper support. Even worse, he suggests that if Oracle's acquisition isn't overturned — highly unlikely at this point — the GPL itself will be jeopardized. "That means the laws that you have for commercial products, that you can't buy a competing commercial product to kill it, doesn't apply to open source," he says. "They will just think about MySQL being under the GPL, and the GPL not being enough to save MySQL."

Submission + - Unity Game Engine Free! (unity3d.com)

mehemiah writes: I think this is old news but somehow it wasn't posted here. Unity Game engine is now Free! Only the pay versions allow iPhone and Wii development however. If this seems insignificant to you, you may never have used a free game engine before. If you have, you probably weren't on a mac. Unity was the first native game engine for the mac. It now supports Windows and has server parts that run on linux. It still maintains its mac native look but most of its scripting languages are in .net so I think it uses mono internally.

Submission + - Unregistered Trademarks from Domain Registry? 2

baldbobbo writes: Around six months ago, I began doing standup comedy, improv and musical theater. Along the way, I met several talented performers putting on various shows. I decided to create an account on twitter called @nolacomedy to list all the various shows around town, then later creating a Facebook Fan Page called NOLA Comedy. The two are linked, and refer to each other.

Recently, I got an email from an angry woman who owns a comedy club. They use the URL nolacomedy.com, but the name of the theater is different. She claims I am infringing on her trademark. "nolacomedy" is not a registered trademark, so it's implied that it's an unregistered TM. Further, she continues to threaten legal action (but will not provide her attorney's contact information. Go figure).

My question for all the Slashdotters is: Does she have legal grounds to sue me? Shouldn't she just sent TOS violations to Facebook and Twitter, and let them decide? According to an ICANN ruling (http://www.disputes.org/decisions/0957.htm) in 2001, registration does not give the registrant an unregistered trademark alone (which is what the woman claims). Are there any precedences in court that deal with this topic? This is occurring in New Orleans, LA (5th Circuit).

nateman1352 writes: Over at mozilla.com the Firefox 3.6 download link has been replaced by a link to Firefox 3.5.7. Moreover attempting to download the file directly from ftp.mozilla.org results in error 550 (Permission Denied.) What gives Mozilla?

Submission + - Antarctica needs a network engineer (itnews.com.au) 2

littlekorea writes: It's a little underpaid, but network engineers with a fetish for very cold weather might be interested to know that the Australian Government's Antarctic Division is seeking network engineers to manage its telephony, satellite and radio comms in Antarctica. According to the job FAQ, summer temperatures aren't a lot colder than your average data centre. But winters of -30 degrees celsius (-22 Fahrenheit) might make the morning jog a little challenging.

Submission + - Ubuntu switches default Firefox search to Yahoo (ubuntu.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Starting in Lucid, the default search engine for Firefox will be switched from Google to Yahoo. The switch has been made after Canonical "negotiated a revenue sharing deal with Yahoo!". Google will still be available as a choice. Since Yahoo search is now powered by Microsoft's Bing, does this mean Microsoft will be paying people for using Ubuntu?

Submission + - Sega's anti-piracy efforts include Steamworks (thekartel.com)

John Master Lee writes: Two highly anticipated PC titles from Sega, Aliens vs Predator and Napoleon: Total War, will now require Steamworks for authentication. This includes both the retail and online copies. Sega Nerds highlights the upsides and downsides of this authentication process.

I am just glad that libraries have been around since forever(at the very least since before MAFIAA/copyright hounds/etc)

Otherwise they would have been nipped in the bud before they even started.

Luckily it is much harder to tell the world "Yes Mr President, we are closing the libraries. Apologies to your mother who was an avid fan since 1882 and your grandad who built this library with his own hands, but this library is costing me money(i think)"
