Submission + - Notebook screens keep getting wider and shorter

NumberField writes: A few years ago, all major notebook makers switched from 4:3 displays to 16:10 displays. Now, they are transitioning to 16:9 aspect ratios. The reason: consumers buy laptops based on the diagonal width of the display, and displays with wider aspect ratios cost less because their area is smaller. For example, a 4:3 display has 12% more screen area and 22% more vertical size than a 16:9 display of the same diagonal size. Users who do word processing, web browsing, or code development, and other vertical applications are frustrated. If the trend continues, soon we'll be viewing the electronic world through a very wide, but vertically tiny, slit.

NASA Funding Boost, But No Shuttle Extension in Obama Budget 133

adeelarshad82 writes to point out that details have been provided for President Obama's proposed $18.7 billion in funding for NASA in 2010 (up from $17.2 billion in 2008). Quoting: "The budget calls on NASA to complete International Space Station construction, as well as continue its Earth science missions and aviation research. Yet it also remains fixed to former President George W. Bush's plan to retire the space shuttle fleet by 2010 and replace them with the new Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle, which would fly astronauts to the space station and return them to the moon by 2020. The outline does make room for an extra shuttle flight beyond the nine currently remaining on NASA's schedule, but only if it is deemed safe and can be flown before the end of 2010."

Researchers Warn of Possible BitTorrent Meltdown 294

secmartin writes "Researchers at Delft University warn that large parts of the BitTorrent network might collapse if The Pirate Bay is forced to shut down. A large part of the available torrents use The Pirate Bay as tracker, and other available trackers will probably be overloaded if all traffic is shifted there. TPB is currently using eight servers for their trackers. According to the researchers, even trackerless torrents using the DHT protocol will face problems: 'One bug in a DHT sorting routine ensures that it can only "stumble upon success", meaning torrent downloads will not start in seconds or minutes if Pirate Bay goes down in flames.'"
