Submission + - China has earliest snowfall in a decade (bbc.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: It seems the Chinese have been playing too much Red Alert and have now managed to succeed in manipulating the weather. The BBC states that "Chinese meteorologists have brought about Beijing's earliest snowfall in a decade, after seeding rain clouds with silver iodide to ease a drought." They have of course done this before and the process of cloud seeding has been in use since its invention after WW2

Submission + - Europe launches pair of new satellites (itpro.co.uk)

nk497 writes: The European Space Agency has launched a pair of new satellites from the Plesestk Cosmodrome in northern Russia last night. The first is a 685kg satellite that can measure the temperature of the earth to test for water salinity and soil moisture. The smaller second satellite piggybacked on the second before separating off with its payload of 17 new technologies for testing, including a camera with a wide angle view of 120 degrees, a dual frequency GPS space reciever, a cold gas generator, tools to study the sun and something called a "xenon-fed resistojet thruster".

US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal 490

theodp writes "Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."

Nice to read that finally one of those guys will be convict'ed.

Hopefully the rest will follow, but i'm afraid that won't be as simple, as in several countries sending spam still isn't illegal...

Wrong...

A condom is not 100% safe, it reduces the odds of getting STDs with 85% (only staying in your mom's basement with the doors locked from in- & outside is).

You are forgetting the risk of the condom cracking, which happens quite a lot, actually. Next to that you are forgetting the odds of performing cunnilingus on a woman also brings risks with it (not a hell of a lot, between 0.5 and 1 in 10.000), but still...

Anyhow, even getting your partner tested doesn't really say anything, because the tests are only 99% sure 6 months after the unprotected sex, so anything in between isn't sure.
Trust between partners is a very important thing, but i wouldn't build my physical health upon it...
