Submission + - Bandwidth being throttled in Bahrain? (tradearabia.com)

__aaelyr464 writes: In light of recent uprising and protests in Bahrain, reports are coming in showing slower than usual internet access across the country. Broadband providers are claiming this is due to high-usage and heavy load, but Twitter is abuzz claiming a government-imposed lockdown. Accounts on the popular media-sharing site Bambuser have reportedly been blocked as well.

Submission + - New Android Trojan Surfaces (threatpost.com)

Trailrunner7 writes: There's a new Android based Trojan called HongTouTou (aka ADRD Trojan) that is packaging itself in popular Android apps and delivering itself through app markets and Chinese forums.
The Trojan is requesting additional permissions from users and may also be executing search related activities under the radar, including keyword searches, the company warned.

Lookout, a mobile security vendor, said it has identified 14 instances of the malware repackaging itself in various wallpaper apps and specifically in the popular game, RoboDefense, made available in alternative application markets. The trojan works by duping an infected app into sending encrypted data containing the device’s IMEI and IMSI to a remote host. HongTouTou then receives a set of search engine target URIs and search keywords to send as queries. It then uses these keywords to emulate search processes, creating searches in the search engine yielding the top results for those keywords and clicking on specific results. To the search engine, the searches appear to be coming from a mobile user using a mobile web browser with User-Agent corresponding to the UCWeb browser.

So really, this whole posting is just speculation. Some agencies in Canada were hacked, possibly by Chinese interests and possibly by little green men from Mars looking to understand the moose population more.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: NAS with Torrenting? 1

__aaelyr464 writes: Over the years, I've slowly found myself using my desktop less and less for everyday work and gaming, and relegating such tasks to my smartphone or laptop. However, one thing has not changed--the use of my desktop for file storage, namely torrents. But it's becoming ever more clear that having a box consuming 350W of power just to house several hard drives for seeding/leeching is a lot of overkill (and wasted money/energy). What solutions exist that act as a NAS, while also giving me the ability to remotely manage torrents--all running in a tidy little box, using as little power as possible?

What about vegans and vegetarians? Since this meat (if I am understanding this correctly) does not come directly from an animal, and rather is GROWN much like a vegetable/fruit (in a sense), will we now open up a new avenue to our vegan friends? Nah, probably not. More fake-meat for me!

What contract? I'm just curious, this isn't a flame post. If Visa did indeed sign some kind of contract stating they would provide credit card service for X number of years, then yes there's a problem. Otherwise, if nothing was signed stating such a thing, I don't see any laws being broken. IANAL, so if I'm wrong someone please tell me.

Stop drinking the anti-VZ kool aid. On four different Android phones on Verizon, nothing you said holds true (Droid, Incredible, Droid X, Droid 2). Yes, there are APPS that Verizon makes exclusive, such as VZ Navigator or the account manager...but really? No one is forced to use Bing or anything.

Not allowing someone to use the iTunes apps store with an iPhone is synonymous to selling an Android phone without the battery. I also believe Apple would have a slight problem with Verizon trying to do such a thing.
