SCO won't go after BSD because Microsoft didn't give them funding to do so (unlike Linux)

MS sees Linux as more of a threat to their core business, no matter what advancements have been made in BSD desktop usage it is perceived to be 'behind' Linux in terms of software/hardware support.

Who know' s maybe they are waiting to go after Apple one day (who use a version of BSD)

Even though Google, Domain registrar GoDaddy and now Dell seem to be pulling out of China (in Google's case its pretty certain) there's one Company that has no qualms about staying.

Good oldie Microsoft has said they have no problem following the countries laws.

This is strange considering Ballmer's obvious aversion to communism
MS' Ballmer: Linux is communism (although I would argue that china is not nor ever has been a true communist state)

You are correct, my great grandfather escaped the Jewish persecution during Stalin's time in power when it was official (not public) policy - to Scotland.

Although by the time that Brin was a lad is was not official policy any longer the effects of state persecution against any minority will take a long time to wane

Just think what the general American (and UK) populations perception of Muslims is now and how long it may take to normalise.

DarkPlaces Dev Forest Hale Corrects Nexuiz GPL Stance 131

Time Doctor writes "There has been a lot of information going around about Nexuiz, the GPL, and what the Nexuiz leadership has done. A new interview has gone up with DarkPlaces developer Forest Hale to set things straight. Quoting: 'The original plan was to contact every developer and relicense the Nexuiz 2.5.2 GPL gamecode sources for this title, to ensure authentic gameplay and return some important features to the community for the benefit of everyone. However this gamecode re-licensing attempt did not go well; with the former developers making claims of violations there was no choice but to re-implement the gamecode from scratch on non-GPL sources. As a result there will be no ongoing code contributions back to the community, and the gameplay may differ more than originally planned. This is a very unfortunate outcome but has no significant impact on development. To make this perfectly clear – the game is being reimplemented from scratch; all they share is a name.'"

I've no idea who 'loses' but i'm sure Microsoft search share will go up if google pulls out . It's not like Microsoft will have any issues doing deals with any totalitarian regime, after all they get their orders from the murky depths of hell itself.

I hope that when google do pull out they re-direct all searches to pages of 'missing history' and goatse man at random.

(Just heard on Channel4 news uk : Google have stopped censoring results!!! )

Anyway good one Google !

At least the Chinese population will get a taste of internet freedom (or at least a freer idea)

Comment FFS! What patents !!!! (Score 2, Interesting) 197

Again they still do not actually say what specific patents !

This should be criminal, the Linux foundations should sue for libel damage.

Fuck it, maybe we all contact companies and ask for money for breaking our imaginary patents.

Also this company is out the USA, do they have crazy software patent laws too.

Thank god for the EU (I never thought i'd say those words)

Funeral Being Held Today For IE6 194

An anonymous reader writes "More than 100 people, many of them dressed in black, are expected to gather around a coffin Thursday to say goodbye to an old friend. The deceased? Internet Explorer 6. The aging Web browser, survived by its descendants Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8, is being eulogized at a tongue-in-cheek 'funeral' hosted by Aten Design Group, a design firm in Denver, Colorado."
