Even if one of those had a Google sized lead (which I am pretty sure none ever did) that would have been in a totally different world. The internet of 1996 is nothing like the internet of 2006, never mind now. Google struck when the iron was hot. That is no strike against them but it is silly to pretend someone could just replace Google now with a snazzy algorithm.

While Googles original efforts were leaps and bounds ahead of the competition and propelled them to their astronomical lead anything done since their dominance is a foregone conclusion. No one cares that much about their Bing or... Yahoo ranking. Everyone has been playing the Google game since. That they stay relevant is solely a combination of their emerging when no one had such a lead and not imploding as a company since. That is all.

They can do all of that, sure. They could launch their own mobile device platform if they wanted. They have that Fortnight money, after all, but this is Apples digital store front. You could equally apply all of your arguments against Steam, but they still arenâ(TM)t going to let you sidestep their cut and still list it in their store. The fact that the word Apple is in the summary really shouldnâ(TM)t cloud this many peopleâ(TM)s judgement... Now Apple not allowing unsigned code on their devices is a different issue, but that isnâ(TM)t the one either of you were discussing.

Firefox isn't clunky. It did have a weird phase before Quantum where it was getting long in the tooth, but since then it has been as smooth as anything Chrome-ian. That period of stagnation before the big release and the fact that the release 'broke' so many old add-ons convinced a lot of people to move to Chrome. That was a fairly short period of time and it is unfortunate that it handed Google as much control as it did.

You know, with arguments like these, I just cannot fathom how you guys haven't won out yet... :p

Seriously though, if you are going to berate people you could at least pretend to be aware of all the other factors at play here. One of the biggest being money. Your 'just vote and like magic everyone else will and then...' platform has basically no capital and no power, you have nothing on the big two in terms of fan base (just getting all the people who don't like big two does nothing to diminish those that somehow actually do like them or simply blindly vote for their 'team' red or blue), and ultimately the incumbent side in every election most likely going to stay put so that puts ~40%+ against you at the start.

I agree with your message and I agree that people refusing to even consider a third party is problematic, but going about it like like an ignorant asshole has 0 probability of changing anything. You're not wrong Walter. You're just an asshole.
