Comment I've defriended many people... (Score 1) 122

...only for two reasons.

1) Their statuses were annoying. They were either constantly emo, pathetic "i have to work FML", or just retarded. I de-friended an aunt who always left stupid crazy statuses in all-caps, "OMG THEY WANT TO BAN RELIGION EVERYONE SIGN THIS NOW." type of stuff. Oh, she also played farmville constantly and clogged up my homescreen with stupid app messages.

2) I completely forgot who they were. Acquaintances from high school or people I met at one party one time who I could no longer even pick you out of a lineup. If I see a status from you on my homepage and I have no idea who you are, out you go.

North Magnetic Pole Racing Toward Siberia 187

RogerRoast sends along a backgrounder from Scientific American on the best current theory as to why the north magnetic pole drifts. "The NMP, also known as the dip pole, is the point on Earth where the planet's magnetic field points straight down into the ground. Scottish explorer James Clark Ross first located the NMP in 1831 on the Boothia Peninsula in what is now northern Canada... [T]he NMP drifts from year to year as geophysical processes within Earth change. For more than 150 years after Ross's measurement its movement was gradual, generally less than 15 kilometers per year. But then, in the 1990s, it picked up speed, ... bolting north–northwest into the Arctic Ocean at more than 55 kilometers per year. If it keeps going it could pass the geographic north pole in a decade or so and carry on toward Siberia."

I don't buy that freedom index at all. Not only is the US #20, it's actually BELOW the UK. A girl was recently arrested for burning a Koran in the UK, and I remember some kids getting arrested for flying a certain flag. In the US, however, NeoNazis and Hippies and Fred Phelps and Gay Pride Parades are all PROTECTED by Police Officers. The US is the only place I know of where an officer of the Law will put his life in the way of your Freedom to speak, even if he and everyone else think that what you are saying is the most hateful, disgusting drivel on the planet.

I view the whole sorry affair as the result of over-exposure to American culture,

Are you kidding me? People in the US look at most of the stuff that goes on in the UK... getting arrested for Tweets, getting arrested for flying certain flags, while guys in America get police protection to obscenely picket funerals. We know that this sort of thing would NEVER fly in America, not in spirit nor in the letter of the law. We've got the First Amendment for that.

a culture of flying off the handle, an overinflated sense of entitlement, and above all, an almost complete lack of understanding of the concept of irony.

Yeah, whatever.

Like Diablo 1 and 2, it will be nothing but a clickfest where the player clicks on random enemies until they die, occasionally picking a new spell to cast. And like Diablo 1 and 2, I will play the fuck out of it and be a hermit for 6 months after its release.

Except that the numbers drastically shift from Liberal to Conservative not at $150k, but at $50k... which isn't all that much money to a lot of us. This means the "educated" liberals likely have bullshit degrees that they can't make money off of or are otherwise (perhaps for ideological reasons) doing jobs that otherwise don't pay well.
