Comment Why is it soaring? (Score 1, Redundant) 346

I've been working with BitKeeper over the past 3 years. From what I understand Git and BitKeeper share exactly the same concept, all differences being minor ones (for example see http://versioncontrolblog.com/comparison/BitKeeper/Git/index.html). BitKeeper has been around for a while. Why is Git suddenly so popular? Is it so popular? What has changed?

Plasma Plants Vaporize Trash While Creating Energy 618

Jason Sahler writes "Recently St. Lucie County in Florida announced that it has teamed up with Geoplasma to develop the United States' first plasma gasification plant. The plant will use super-hot 10,000 degree Fahrenheit plasma to effectively vaporize 1,500 tons of trash each day, which in turn spins turbines to generate 60MW of electricity — enough to power 50,000 homes!"

The Federal Trade Commission monitored the group's finances and found that they had cleared $400,000 in Visa charges in one month alone."

Getting Hired As an Entry-Level Programmer? 540

An anonymous reader writes "I received a state university degree in Computer Science. After graduation, I immediately took jobs in QA to pay the bills while waiting for other opportunities, which of course turned out to be as naive as it sounds. I've been working QA for several years now and my resume does not show the right kind of work experience for programming. On the whole I'm probably no better as a a candidate than a CS graduate fresh out of college. But all of the job postings out in the real world are looking for people with 2-5 years of programming work experience. How do you build up those first 2 years of experience? What kinds of companies hire programmers with no prior experience?"

Man Uses Remote Logon To Help Find Laptop Thief 251

After his computer was stolen, Jose Caceres used a remote access program to log on every day and watch it being used. The laptop was stolen on Sept. 4, when he left it on top of his car while carrying other things into his home. "It was kind of frustrating because he was mostly using it to watch porn," Caceres said. "I couldn't get any information about him." Last week the thief messed up and registered on a web site with his name and address. Jose alerted the police, who arrested a suspect a few hours later. The moral of the story: never go to a porn site where you have to register.
