Asus Demos First Intel P55 48

adeelarshad82 writes "Intel's X58 chipset is the platform of choice for enthusiasts, but Intel serves a heck of a big audience. To please that larger crowd and bring down prices, the company is planning a mainstream iteration of its Nehalem architecture: the P55 chipset. It's designed to work with the forthcoming Lynnfield CPUs, and offers performance close to LGA1366 chips at a much cheaper price. Recently Asus demoed its first intel P55 chip and released exclusive photos. Asus claims to have run its new boards with engineering samples of the Core i5-750 at a 77 percent overclock, boosting speeds from 2.66 GHz to 4.7 GHz. Asus admits this wasn't necessarily stable, but still — that's fast. And on liquid cooling, the boards reportedly hit speeds of 5.1 GHz."

Rock Band To Allow Independent Artists To Add Their Own Songs 57

Bakkster writes "Independent artists will be able to use the XNA Creator's Club to produce the Rock Band note-charts for their music and sell them in game later this year. Bands will use their original song masters and generate a MIDI file that produces the game 'gems' to which players can follow along. Tracks must pass a review process with other XNA members, and then a final approval from MTV Games. Songs will be sold for between 50 cents and $3, with the artist getting a 30% cut after MTV and Microsoft take their cut. The best tracks will also make their way to the Wii and PS3 after a 30-day exclusive period."

Why did this get modded troll?? I wholeheartedly agree and find this to be a legitimate question. What's the point of sending humans to the moon again (seriously...what is to be gained?). I can't think of any reason to send people to the moon again. It won't woo the public like it did during the original Apollo missions and that's the only logical reason I can see for sending people there (PR stunt). A robot would be more efficient, cheaper, and could stay longer and do a lot more research than a human crew could.

ArenaLive, an Open Source MMOFPS 95

ZeXx86 writes "ArenaLive is a new open source game based on the well-known OpenArena. Its aim is to become an open-source alternative to id Software's QuakeLive. The main idea is to make a game available in your web browser. So far, the game is playable and provides player stats, straight-forward settings for your account in a web browser and, of course, loads of fun with your friends. At the moment, it is available only for 32/64bit Mozilla Firefox on GNU/Linux, however, support for other platforms and browsers is coming soon. The game is licensed under GNU/GPL2. It's still in an early development stage, so players and developers both are welcome to join."

I'd mod you up if I could (I can't lie...I like burgers). But I agree with your statements of the 'glorified chatroom'. I still play Warcraft 3 with some friends online every now and then through Battle.net and sometimes it's a serious pain in the ass. We don't use the chat options in battle.net because most of the rooms are filled with idiots, while we set up our games we coordinate using AIM until we're actually in the game. So, forcing a player to go through this nonsense to play a local game when it doesn't have to be necessary is a serious slap in the face (and as a hard core fan, I for one am DEFINITELY not happy with this decision either).

I agree...I've followed this trial as many others have and the verdict is not surprising. However, the damages are. So far I've read comments criticizing the RIAA as well as fellow Slashdotters for various things, however no one has disagreed with the excessive nature of the damages. As I am not a lawyer nor am I very active person politically, I am curious, is there anything we can do to get these crazy ass laws updated? (I'm asking legitimately...I don't know what avenues a normal citizen can pursue to voice their opinion on the matter with people that are in a position to change it). This kind of thing really bothers me, it's an injustice and yeah it feels good to complain about it on here, but realistically complaining on here isn't going to change anything about it.

I was going to make this very point but am glad I'm not the only one thinking this. EA of course is not the only company who's its own worst enemy (or best friend depending on how you look at it...because if it wasn't leaked early we wouldn't be talking about it, and that many fewer people would even know the game existed). Of course, if the 'leak' was done intentionally I am sure there was a cost analysis done as to the potential benefits vs. drawbacks (in order to monetize their consumer base as much as possible). But, I'm still in agreement...its not the consumer's fault that their product is available before they wanted it to be.

The Sims 3 Racks Up Over 180,000 Downloads Prior To Release 187

Bloomberg reports that pirated versions of EA's The Sims 3 were downloaded over 180,000 times between May 18 and May 21. The game will not be officially released until June 2nd, and it does not make use of SecuROM for DRM. Quoting: "That outpaces the 400,000 downloads over three weeks for Electronic Arts' Spore, the most-pirated game of 2008. ... Copies of the game available on file-sharing Web sites aren't the full version, Electronic Arts said. 'The pirated version is a buggy, pre-final build of the game,' Holly Rockwood, a company spokeswoman, said in an e-mailed statement. 'It's not the full game. Half the world — an entire city — is missing from the pirated copy.'"

Biden Promises 'Right Person' As Copyright Czar 492

Hugh Pickens writes "Vice President Joe Biden lauded Hollywood at a gala dinner in Washington, assailed movie piracy, and promised film executives that the Obama administration would pick 'the right person' as its copyright czar. Biden warned of the harms of piracy at the private event organized by the Motion Picture Association of America in the sumptuous, newly renovated Great Hall of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. 'It's pure theft, stolen from the artists and quite frankly from the American people as consequence of loss of jobs and as a consequence of loss of income,' Biden said, according to a White House pool report. Biden addressed President Obama's forthcoming decision about who will be named the intellectual-property enforcement coordinator, better known as the copyright czar. Under a law approved by the US Congress last October, Obama is required to appoint someone to coordinate the administration's IP enforcement efforts and prepare annual reports. Copyright industry lobbyists sent a letter to the president asking him to pick someone sympathetic to their concerns, while groups that would curb copyright law sent their own letter (PDF) urging the opposite approach. We 'will find the right person for intellectual property czar,' Biden said."

Designing DNA Circuits To Brew Tastier Beer 135

Al writes "Researchers at Boston University have developed a way to predict the behavior of different DNA segments and make synthetic biology a little bit more reliable. James Collins and colleagues have built libraries of component parts and a mathematical modeling system to help them predict the behavior of parts of a gene network. Like any self-respected bunch of grad students, they decided to demonstrate the approach by making beer. They engineered gene promoters to control when flocculation occurs in brewers yeast, which allowed them to finely control the flavor of the resulting beer."
