Secret Service Runs At "Six Sixes" Availability 248

PCM2 writes "ABC News is reporting that the US Secret Service is in dire need of server upgrades. 'Currently, 42 mission-oriented applications run on a 1980s IBM mainframe with a 68 percent performance reliability rating,' says one leaked memo. That finding was the result of an NSA study commissioned by the Secret Service to evaluate the severity of their computer problems. Curiously, upgrades to the Service's computers are being championed by Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who says he's had 'concern for a while' about the issue."

If your options are:

1. Don't restrict things and punish those that break the law after they've broken it.
2. Restrict things only for those that would use them in a way that would break the law.
3. Restrict things for everybody, even those who don't need the restriction.

The only viable option is option one. Two was stated by you to be impossible and three is repugnant.

Seinfeld's Good Samaritan Law Now Reality? 735

e3m4n writes "The fictitious 'good samaritan' law from the final episode of Seinfeld (the one that landed them in jail for a year) appears to be headed toward reality for California residents after the house passed this bill. There are some differences, such as direct action is not required, but the concept of guilt by association for not doing the right thing is still on the face of the bill."

Wealth tax? Really?

So if i make 100 dollars I pay an income tax on that 100 dollars. No problem.

Then I put the remaining 75 dollars in the bank.

Then I get taxed on the 75 dollar balance that I already paid taxes on? Wow, that's ridiculous.

Tax on dividends? No problem, it's additional income.

Tax on money I've already been taxed on? Fucked.

I in fact do think that screaming fire at the back of a crowded theater should be free speech. And if people were injured because of that, or if property was damaged because of it, I should be held liable.

However I should not be liable if someone in the theater decided to commit suicide in the theater rather than try to exit it.

There is a difference between my actions causing the death of another through accident, or mishap, etc., and someone deciding that it's easier to kill themselves rather than deal with name calling or other harassment.

In the movie theater example my actions caused a panic and that panic caused bad things to happen. I should be held responsible for that panic.

In the harassment example my actions caused you to feel bad and have some emotional distress. I should not be responsible for your decision to off yourself.

If my harassment falls afoul of harassment laws then I should be punished for those offenses, but that is a far cry from being responsible for your death.

By the way, fantastic insults! I had to look up homunculous.

Sorry, but if you kill yourself because I call you a fucking pansy I should not be held responsible for that act.

You killed yourself.

I did not kill you. I called you a name.

Last I checked name calling was legal.

And you know what, it always should be.

You fucking pansy.

It's funny. Laugh.

Just because it was written doesn't make it so.

I was talking about something a bit lower level than they were. If living were a right then how you kill anything to eat? It is that brocolli stalks right to live, how dare you kill it so that you can live?

The point is this, life is difficult, only those who try the hardest (or get really lucky) get to win. The sooner that people figure that out the better off they are.

Submission + - Most Comprehensive Reverse Hash Lookup (MD5, etc)

Dustin Fineout writes: "A new reverse hash look-up web site has been launched which conglomerates the separate efforts of many such sites into a single resource. http://md5.dustinfineout.com/ searches both local databases and several remote servers to create the most comprehensive reverse hash look-up available anywhere, and in under ten seconds.

The initial version, launched yesterday, offers reverse hash look-up for the MD5 algorithm on a total of six servers' databases. By the end of the week, support for SHA1, MD2, MD4, LanMan, and NTLM algorithms have been promised, as well as expanding the server pool to at least 10 different data sources. The web application also allows visitors to add entries to the datapool by checking for their existence in all servers in the datapool before adding to a local database. The source code for both the online PHP application and several Java programs are also scheduled to be released under the BSD license by the end of this week."

Microsoft PowerShell RC1 548

rst+ack writes "Microsoft has released RC1 version of PowerShell the .NET-based shell with perl-like syntax previously known as Monad or MSH. PowerShell (PS) has been covered a few times on Slashdot. Contrary to cmd.exe and Unix/Linux shells it operates on objects, not text when passing data between scripts and executables. Easy access to .NET classes allows users to create quite advanced solutions in short time. PS won't be shipped with Vista or Windows Server 2007 but it will debut with Exchange 12."
