Comment Re:Where is why? (Score 1) 564

There not a shortage of tech jobs right now, particularly in engineering, but also in other hard sciences.

Maybe if "we" got out of the mindset of wanting to pay third world wages, people would move to these kinds of fields?

It is funny, in my opinion, the ones to the greatest extent setting wages ( trying to keep them low ) seem to be the ones lamenting the fact that people don't want those jobs, and all the while praising the market for all the magic it can do ( and it can ).

I thought tech jobs were paying well in the US? The lowest wage I could earn in the US is at least two times as much as I earn in Argentina working as a software developer, even when most things cost twice as much as in the US (1000 ARS are 224 USD)

I don't see how USD50 000 is a third word wage.

The problem isn't that we aren't going to see millionaire musicians anymore. The problem is that your statement that "an artist can make it on their own" is, for the most part, not true. Never mind millions -- almost no artists are making a basic living selling music anymore (...) no artists, except those at the absolute top of the heap, are making a living selling their music anymore.

These days, to the extent that an artist or act is able to make enough money to continue to make music, that money isn't coming from music sales. It's coming from shows: what they make playing shows (including merchandise sold at shows) minus the costs of doing them.

I have to say that I don't see the problem there. As long as you are working you are getting paid and records (and piracy btw) are just publicity that people pay for in that situation.

Sadly, I've seen product placement being used more and more on the handful of shows that I watch. I cringe every time they write in products just for the product's sake in Fringe or House. If showing or mentioning a product isn't functional to the plot, it's noise.

I don't mind a frontal shot of a Nissan car driven by the good guys, but hijacking 30 seconds of an episode to talk about the car itself of a phone NFC paying system makes me cringe.

If they start adding product placement on Game of Thrones I'll give up on TV completely.

All walls that can be bombed are clearly marked, and the weapon you just found in the dungeon you are in, is the one you must use to kill the boss of that dungeon. There's also a giant red arrow point at the enemy's weak spot. The game is a lot longer now though.

I remember Zelda 3 as being like that too...

My wife is a recruiter and if people submit their resumes in anything other then .doc(x) i tell her to push back to the candidate and get a properly formatted resume.

Really? You're openly admitting to be one of those people that don't accept self contained HTML nor PDF resumes?

I just let you know that I hate you. I really don't understand why HR does that.

I'm a developer at an ISV. Personally, I am waiting for XP to go. Microsoft has some great technology (WWSAPI, SQL Server 2012 LocalDB) that looks like it will solve some of the problems we need to solve with our application, but it's not available on XP.

I'm really intrigued by why you couldn't use SQLite3 instead of SQL Server 2012 LocalDB or any API other than WWSAPI for web services.
