Submission + - The future of NASA (reuters.com)

Amiralul writes: In the current climate, as the new US budget plan forces the Constellation project to shut down and handle the LEO space business to private sector, what is the purpose of NASA in the foreseeable future? For the first time, NASA doesn't have even a planned vehicle to allow astronauts to reach Earth's orbit (since space shuttles are scheduled for retirement this year), nor does it have any future manned exploration plans for Moon, Mars and beyond. As manned spaceflight will probably fade-out soon, as private corporates lacks the resources and reasons to fund a mission to the Moon or Mars, what is the purpose of NASA, as a standalone agency? US Army could take over existing satellites maintenance and future launches, since Obama administration doesn't think beyond LEO. No launch vehicle for human missions, no new rockets planned, no roadmap for returning crews on the Moon, no planned Mars expedition for the foreseeable future, so why what's the purpose of NASA these days?

Honestly, I think that even in this current state, pushing Constellation to the Moon is not such a high expense for the US. The extra money NASA needs for this cannot be compared to the cost of War, money pumped into the financial system or national deficit. The current administration does not lack the money for the Moon and Mars. They lack the will and the determination for such a thing.

I never measured, but sometimes I spend hours in a room with two vacuum pumps, two water chillers (one for the spectrometer and one for the laser) and two PCs. It's so loud that when someone enters the room and I just see him/her next to me, that scares the hell out of me, since I cannot hear the door or their steps/movements.

Thanks so much for the tip! I work in a lab and I have two computers, one for controlling a mass spectrometer and one for a laser system and when I do measurements, I use both of them in the same time. I got confused a few times, since they have different keyboard and mouse, but now that I know about synergy, things will work faster, less confusing and I'll gain some space on my tiny desk.
