Comment Nice but still has issues (Score 1) 554

If anyone of you have a large collection of music and video's, and use windows 7 with WMP, you will notice how the system still hangs itself outright when it indexes time after time after time.......... i know, maybe i have a good lot of media stuff, but still the OS is not aware of say a MPC i have open watching a movie. So yes, it will start indexing again, and make the movie stutter. The thing that i could track it to, was that wmpnetwork part, was indexing all my stuff to be searchable for my nonexistant networked pc's who allso supposedly would be playing from my pc. So i am now in a lucky position, that MS have made WMP uninstallable, now that its gone, i am really liking the OS okay. But i could imagine they should fix the issue with the system not recognizing a video bieng played by another program, be course it sucks as it is.

If only there was some country that had already experimented with this... Oh wait. There is.

In 2001 Portugal did just this. They decriminalized everything. and 7 years later it's working better than imagined.

Everyone caught using is suggested to go to a class (but it's not required.). Sure they're a bit smaller than the US, but there's no reason it couldn't work here.

Hey, That was a very interesting read m8, thanks.. i had no idea there was any such things in the move. As a casual smoker of weed, i for one would like our politicians to open they bloody eyes for once and realize we need some other approach than the current in ALL countryes.. not just USA or one or 2 european countryes. If not legalizing it, atleast decriminalize.. it makes so much sence!

Same experience, i have had 3 1TB drives for personal use, the first 2 was broken when i got them.....! one was a WD green drive, another was a Samsung.. the one working in the end was the most expensive of the 3, a hitachi.
I for one was actually experiencing better durability of ide/sata drives for a long time, but the huge failure rate of 2/3 got me wondering.

As an alltime fan of the triologi you mention, i would love to see x-wing, tie-fighter and alliance get an overhaul. I do think my wingman joystick is gone, but i might just get a new if it comes out.

I talked to a friend of mine, whoom i played the original x-wing much with, about reviving the game on my coming setup with a projector screen.. omg imagine playing in dark space, dogfights, with a HUD the size of a living room wall.. yay!!! I might just load the old stuff (still have the original boxes) so any new revisions would just be a bonus.

HP Seeks to Block Competitor From Revealing Its Pricing 144

Matt Asay writes "On October 13, 2008, Hewlett-Packard sent a complaint to an open-source competitor, GroundWork, asking GroundWork to stop revealing HP's 'confidential' pricing. CNET has posted the letter, which indicates that HP doesn't want its pricing revealed, but which doesn't question the veracity of the pricing (which, not surprisingly, is 82 percent higher than the open-source vendor's). Does HP think its pricing is really a secret? It's publicly available at GSA Advantage. Guess what? HP software costs a lot of money, but presumably feels that it can justify the high prices. Why try to hide the pricing information?"

Comment It really is a cool game, no really (Score 1) 317

I played wow for way to long, and also dark age of Camelot for way to long. This game is by far nothing to do with wow, except for the general mmopg terms that is derived. But that is hard not to like, as it makes it easier. Also many of the trivial things, is solved very elegantly.

Good it is really cool to do some real pvp again, i missed it for all the time in wow... no bonus for anyone but yourself, is just lame, now you can fight for something more than yourself.
very refreshing game style, and the game is the most polished release i have seen to date, hands down.

Russian Google Competitor Embraces Open Source Messaging 127

rm writes "Internet search and mail provider Yandex, which many view to be Google's main competitor in Russia, has recently added an instant messaging capability to its mail notifier application Ya.Online. As it turns out, the IM service is based on the open XMPP protocol, with connectivity to all other public Jabber servers available from day one. MacOS X and GNU/Linux versions of the app were also released (complete with sources under the GPL) and are determined to be based on the Psi IM client. Yandex looks to be a firm believer in open-source, also running a mirror site for FOSS and actively promoting its branded version of Firefox. Here's hoping that its affair with XMPP will help eliminate ICQ's enormous foothold in Russia."

The Internet Meme Timeline 235

CNet pointed out a great use of timeline creation site "Dipity" that has resulted a timeline of internet fads and memes. While there are some subtle inaccuracies and a few notable omissions, it seems to have touched on most of the big stuff. Everything from GOTO being considered harmful to "the website is down," it's a great trip down memory lane if you don't mind a few speedbumps like the goatse guy.

$12 MIT Computer Based On NES, Not Apple II 308

ericatcw writes "The $12 computer that a bunch of designers and grad students are talking up at an MIT conference this month as a potential, cheaper alternative to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) for Third World students is actually a knockoff of the original Nintendo Entertainment System gaming console released in the mid-1980s, reports Computerworld, and confirmed in a comment by the project's spokesman, Derek Lomas. According to Lomas' account and pictures, the Victor-70 is an 8-bit NES clone that accepts its cartridges and is wholly contained in the keyboard. It is also likely to be an unlicensed clone made in China, according to Lomas, though he notes that may not matter patent-wise in the US, due to the length of time that has passed."
