The Push For Colbert's "Restoring Truthiness" Rally 703

jamie writes "A grassroots campaign has begun to get Stephen Colbert to hold a rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to counter Glenn Beck's recent 'Restoring Honor' event. The would-be rally has been dubbed 'Restoring Truthiness' and was inspired by a recent post on Reddit, where a young woman wondered if the only way to point out the absurdity of the Tea Party's rally would be if Colbert mirrored it with his own Colbert Nation.'"

All five who aced the test were women. The company’s targeted included Google, Wal-Mart, Symantec, Cisco, Microsoft, Pepsi, Ford and Coca-Cola. "If we had been hired by each one of these companies to do a security audit on the social engineering side, almost every one of the companies would have failed," said one event organizer.

Submission + - Spammers Attack Apple's Ping Social Network (net-security.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Scammers and spammers have deluged the new Ping musical social network, created by Apple and built into the new version of iTunes. Ping is a cross-between Facebook and Twitter, giving over 160 million iTunes users the ability to build networks of friends and musicians, and read comments by other fans. Sophos researchers have found that Ping is being over-run by scams and spam messages. It's ironic that the most common scams on Ping right now revolve around Apple's own iPhone.

Submission + - University of Missouri Reveals Students' SSNs (umsystem.edu)

gamerdonkey writes: The University of Missouri has exposed an unknown number of student Social Security Numbers on tax documents sent through US Mail. The numbers were apparently 'partially or fully viewable through the envelope window', and the only way for students to know if they were affected is to visually inspect the envelope before opening. Thus far, the UM System has responded by notifying students of the screw up via email, but is only offering a discount on some credit monitoring services for those who may be at risk.

The Credibility Issues of MS's CodePlex Foundation 137

alphadogg writes 'Microsoft's new CodePlex Foundation has serious flaws to correct if it wants to become a credible force in the open source industry, and attract a diverse collection of developers and participants, according to an expert in forming consortia and foundations. Andy Updegrove, a lawyer and founder of ConsortiumInfo.org, says Microsoft has created with CodePlex a rigid foundation that has almost no wiggle room and a poorly crafted governance structure that concentrates authority at the top and leaves little power to others who might join the foundation.' Here is Andy's detailed analysis of CodePlex's structure: "Over the past 22 years, I've helped structure scores of open, consensus based consortia and foundations, and represented over 100 in all... In this blog entry, I'll show where I think the legal and governance structure of CodePlex has wandered off the open path, and offer specific recommendations for how the structure could be changed to give people (other than Microsoft business partners) confidence that CodePlex will be an organization worth joining."

Submission + - Pirate Party is Now Third Largest in Sweden

gamerdonkey writes: Membership in the Swedish Pirate Party has exploded since the end of the Pirate Bay trial. In those three weeks, the party has tripled its membership, reaching 44,000, and has today surpassed the Center Party, making it the third largest political party in Sweden. Moreover, if growth continues at this rate, it will take the second spot in the country. The party leader, Rick Falkvinge, commented on the achievement and the trial that sparked it, stating, "The Pirate Bay verdict was not a single event, but the final straw in a long series of events... With just one month till the European elections, the timing of these horrible events arguably work as a catalyst for change." Falkvinge also commented on how this improves the party's odds in the upcoming elections, "It's not a question of 'a' seat any more. If everybody who is angry with the Pirate Bay verdict goes to vote, we will get at least one seat, and probably more."
