Giving them a gun course isn't going to un-Hollywoodize firearms

No but given:
1 Guns are out there and available to (mostly) everyone and
2 Hollywood is unlikely to start glamorizing gun safety and proper respect for firearms
Would you rather have your armed populace be (a) trained or (b) untrained in firearms handling / safety, all else being equal?

As you said yourself, a hunting weapon may not be ideal for self / home defense. That being said:
Imagine we made roads safer by putting huge fences around them all, rather than teaching people that cars drive on roads and how to cross the road safely.
Imagine you had to go to the pharmacist for every pill you take, so you don't overdo it.
Imagine you needed an escort for a daytime walk in the woods.
In all these cases, a little education goes a long way. Think of a loaded firearm like a plugged in ripsaw, and educate your household to treat it as a potentially dangerous tool. Really, that's exactly what it is.
Today I saw a commercial where some kids were playing hide and seek, the sister hides in a closet and finds a gun. Instead of putting it back or telling her parents what she found, she starts playing with it like it was a toy. After looking down the barrel, sticking her fingers in it and pretending to shoot it, she (presumably) shoots her brother at the end of the clip. While she's playing with a loaded frickin' gun there's text on the screen about how bad guns are and what a tragedy they represent. I wanted to ask the video "Where's the friggin' parents? WTF are they thinking keeping a loaded gun where a kid can get to it without teaching them what is and is not appropriate to do with it? How is this the fault of the gun that the parents were horrendously irresponsible?"
Ok, done with my rant.

As a teenager driving a rusted, orange longbed truck with no muffler, I managed to accrue enough points to get my license suspended for six months. Two days before that was up I got pulled over for not using my turn signal, and that time I got a year (and more fines, of course). At no point did anyone suggest there would be any leeway for things like getting to my job or college, and there was in fact not. Maybe I chose the wrong state to grow up in?

I've seen trials of this here in Vegas. They had these touchscreen kiosks resembling a video game cabinet, but without the fun, up in front of the order taking counter. I never saw anyone that preferred using one over just talking to a person, myself included.
I spend all day banging on a keyboard, I have NO interest in interacting with one for my lunch!
BTW, I haven't seen one in months.
OTOH, some of the newer soda fountain dispensers have a touchscreen interface that's just great. My theory is that there's a benefit to being able to precisely tailor your drink while there is no benefit (to the customer) in tapping on a screen to order, it's actually more work. Maybe if there was a discount for kiosk users it could catch on, but that would involve passing savings to the customer and we know how that works out.

How can we expect young people to make wise choices regarding sex when we hide it from them, depriving them of the information they'll need to make a intelligent, informed decisions when the time comes? For the kids' sake, teach them reality before the world smacks them in the face with it!

Ah, but you're talking about movies. I sincerely want to listen to my Disturbed and later Metallica at a high volume for more than a song or two. Any more than 10 minutes tops and it's like my ears start hurting 'cause the music degenerates into noise. Good phrase I just ran across to describe this is "fatiguing distortion". Put on the old stuff that that doesn't happen.
In the TV world, I think you want to turn on TruVolume, Dynamic volume or Dolby volume. If you have them, these features on your TV will even out the sound in the way you describe.

Yup.

The Loudness Wars rendered most of this moot. :(

The lack of dynamic range in "remastered" music was the first thing I thought of. Never mind style, 80s music just sounds better. If there was a place to get current FLAC format music that wasn't ruined as demonstrated by the parent above, I'd be happy to pay a bit more for it. Anyone know of such a thing?
