Really?

Since switching several companies from other products to Kaspersky...

No viruses have crept through the systems - none.

We had one brief period of downtime on one customer related to a bad configuration of the admin server (my fault, still I guess it could have been clearer).

Performance is overall quite good, even on older machines. On newer machines, people don't even notice that it's running.

I admit though, I'm irritated about the issue of the original post, which has NOTHING to do with the product itself. Sounds to me like their entire web dev team needs a serious overhaul, or at least a few more night classes at the local community college ;)

Apple

Happy 25th, Macintosh! 296

bradgoodman writes to tell us that tomorrow will mark the 25th anniversary of the first Macintosh, debuting just 2 days after the famous Super Bowl XVIII commercial. "'The Macintosh demonstrated that it was possible and profitable to create a machine to be used by millions and millions of people,' said Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, research director for the Institute for the Future, a Palo Alto, California, think tank, and chief force behind 'Making the Macintosh: Technology and Culture in Silicon Valley,' an online historical exhibit. 'The gold standard now for personal electronics is, "Is it easy enough for my grandmother to use it?" People on the Macintosh project were the first people to talk about a product in that way.'"

Okay, first, I have to admit I didn't vote for this Governor or the guy he replaced.

Personally, I'd love to find a way to point out that this is just 'a silly democrat thing' - but it has nothing to do with his politics.

Someone (probably in the DMV) sold him on this idea, in the thought that they can bilk more cash out of an unsuspecting populace. Trust me, right now they are stressing the 'we aren't tracking you' idea, but if this goes through, someday down the road that too will come about, in the interest of public safety.

This is a governor that set us up to require a prescription for OTC allergy medication because a tiny percentage of the population makes drugs with it.

The biggest issue in all of modern US government, and my state in particular, is the eagerness to threaten to cut the important services to try to push the tax paying public to shell out more. Of course, the choices of 'important' can vary.

NASA

Submission + - NASA Unmanned Drone Used To Monitor Fires (cnn.com)

VoxMagis writes: CNN reports on NASA's version of the military Predator-B unmanned drone. This is being used to monitor the fires in SoCal and the damage caused. 'Ikhana' and Earth-orbiting satellites are being used by NASA to study the process of fire monitoring as well as to assist emergency response. The article is a bit short on information, but there are a couple of good pictures.
From the article: "Ikhana's main task is to scan the wildfires at close range and send thermal-infrared imagery to a central server accessible by agencies such as FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security, emergency-service centers in Southern California, and even the Pentagon."

Submission + - Steve Fossett Missing

jd writes: "Steve Fossett, the first person to fly a plane around the world without refueling, the first person to fly around the world in a balloon, and possibly the record-holder for the highest altitude glider flight, is missing. He is reported to have taken off in a light aircraft last night and has not been seen since. As he had filed no flight plan, would-be rescuers have no idea where to even begin looking. The plane took off from a private airstrip on a ranch south of Smith Valley in western Nevada."

Submission + - Hackers Unite: PSP can be downgraded, un-bricked

VoxMagis writes: A group of talented PSP hackers have developed a system to downgrade and unbrick (permanently crash) the PSP. A group including the well known (in the PSP home brew world) Dark_Alex has developed a set of software that closely imitates the Sony Service Battery (Known as "JigKick").
This opens up amazing new potential for the home brew scene for the Playstation Portable. With the ability to repair a corrupted PSP or to reset a new one, the safety and usability of PSP software has truly taken a step up.
