Submission + - How do IT guys get respect and not become BOFHs? 1

An anonymous reader writes: I work for a small software company (around 60 people) as the sole IT guy. It's my first time in a position like this and after about 1.5 years I'm starting to get a bit of burnout. I try to be friendly, helpful and responsive and I get no respect whatsoever. Users tend to be flat out rude when they have a problem, violate our pretty liberal policies constantly, and expect complex projects to be finished immediately upon requesting them. My knee-jerk reaction is to be a bastard, although I've avoided it up to this point. It's getting harder. For those of you who have been doing this a lot longer, how do you get a reasonable level of respect from your users while not being a jerk?

When the scientists realize this simple truth, AI will become a child's problem.

That is not a new idea at all. Scientists are well aware of pattern matching in the human brain. AI is still not "a child's problem".

Zotac's Ion-Based Mini-ITX Board For Atom Debuts 106

MojoKid writes "There have been a handful of NVIDIA Ion-based products with Intel's Atom processor that have been unveiled recently, ranging from NVIDIA's own reference system, to the Acer Aspire Revo SFF PC. Today Zotac announced an Ion motherboard that will be appealing to the DIY crowd. The design of this IONITX-A model board tested and reviewed here in particular, offers some very interesting features, not the least of which is its DC power input with an external power brick. It also is built on Intel's dual core Atom process for a bit more horsepower to back up NVIDIA's Ion integrated graphics chip."

Very true. I never get flu shots and have only gotten the flu a couple times in my life. This one has me a little more concerned.

It is my understanding that the better your immune system, the more dangerous swine flu is. Something to do with inflammation in the lungs as your body fights off the disease. I have already had autoimmune problems in the past, so I think swine flu would own me.

As such, I have been putting together a swine flu preparedness plan that mostly involves me stockpiling frozen pizzas and playing World of Warcraft until this whole thing dies down.

There is no remote or lawless place where I can go and be safe from government. Maybe if I were to lay low, but if in Somalia for example, if I were to earn enough money, I'd get noticed and have to fight a fight I can't win.

My only hope is to try and find a government that uses the minimum amount of force necessary to preserve freedom. I don't believe one exists, though, and democracy seems incapable of creating such a utopia.

I agree we need democracy in orbit. There is no better method of decision making than letting the American people decide. For example, the shuttles themselves should be designed and built by the people. And the voters should decide who gets to be on the crew.

Wait, wtf am I talking about? Just call the damn thing Serenity already and tell Colbert "you can't take the sky from me".
