Comment Be creative but have rules (Score 2, Interesting) 429

A server name needs to directly correspond to a server's function. I'm not saying you can't be creative but don't be stupid. When you grow beyond ~10 servers, cutesie names are going to cause you to work weekends trying to track down basic networking issues. Here's what I do: if it's a web server, start the name with a "W". MySQL server, start the name with an "M" and so on. If it's paired or load balanced, put a numeral on the end of it to identify it's system. Beyond that, I let the interns name the servers using whatever new-age cultural references their little inexperienced hearts desire.

Eventually you may outgrow any naming convention but by then you hope to be on an island sipping margaritas while someone else worries about these things.

Actually that whole 49% figure is misleading. The element of "time" is conveniently left out. 49% of Americans at any given "time" do not pay income tax, not because they are lazy, poor, freeloading citizens but because they are either too young to earn income or retired. In actuality, over 90% of Americans pay income tax at some point in their lifetimes.

Ah, but the problem lies in that most Christians prefer the "Top Down" theory: The words of the bible may have been written by imperfect men but those men were merely acting upon a divine intervention which chose the words for them without their knowledge. Hence, the bible is the word of the lord, not of disciples three generations removed from Jesus who were telling stories to help children recall astrological events.

You cannot combat "devine" logic because it does not follow the rules of "real" logic.

Exactly. A similar example of this is the drug Propecia - the hair loss drug. Propecia is a 1mg dosage of Finasteride that goes for over $2 a pill and is patented so there's no generic option. The thing is, Finasteride isn't new, it has been around since the 60's in a 4mg dosage to treat prostate enlargement and hormonal issues, it isn't under patent anymore and costs about $.02 a pill. Merck came along a few years ago and claimed to invent the same damn drug for a different purpose and got an 8 year patent on it allowing them to jack the price for no good reason.

Actually corn sucks as a fuel FYI. Most other alternative fuels pack more punch per ounce including waste materials like methane. Unfortunately as Americans, corn is all we really have because that's one of the few the crops the government chose to subsidize starting back in 1929. We have so much corn that the government at times decided to purchase and burn tons of it just to keep prices inflated and protect farmers. But if you care to save our sacred crop that makes us fat, makes our livestock sick, and sucks as a fuel then more power to you.

I support growing more grass even if we use it as fuel.

I hate to give credence to hollywood scripts like IRobot but there could be potential downfalls to having a pure AI computer controlling a potentially fatal machine on public streets. Suppose for whatever reason, an accident occurs in which a computer going 70 mph must choose between hitting a 7-year old girl or killing the driver. The human driver might sacrifice himself at all costs. A purely logical computer might not.

All in all it would probably be better than normal drivers out there but food for thought.
