Hubble Photographs Jupiter's New "Scar" 60

BearRanger writes "Calibration of new systems in the Hubble Space Telescope (installed in May by Shuttle Atlantis astronauts) were interrupted to take pictures of the new 'scar' near the south pole of Jupiter. The scar is believed to have been caused by the impact of an asteroid or small comet with the gas giant, which we discussed last Sunday. Hubble's return to service will be delayed by this interruption, but NASA says that rare events such as this warrant the delay. This is only the second recorded impact of an object with Jupiter."

Best Mouse For Programming? 569

LosManos writes "Which is the best programming mouse? Mandatory musts are wireless, and that it doesn't clog up like old mechanical mice. Present personal preferences are for: lots of buttons, since if I have moved my hand away from the keyboard I can at least do something more than move the pointer; sturdy feeling; not too light, so it doesn't move around by me accidentally looking at it." What would you recommend?

I guess I was painting with a broad brush... I was referring more to early childhood education. I live in Charlottesville, VA which is home to UVA which has a very good education program... My gf's sister is a graduate from their early childhood education program. >90% of their graduates are women - and from the ones I've met 100% profess to being bad at math/dislike math. That translates into the classroom when they teach stuff (granted simple things like addition and subtraction) either disproportionately or poorly to begin with.

Having not read the actual PDF, I wonder if having a bunch of mathematically disinclined women teaching math to young students would have something to do with it? Note: I'm not trying to be misogynistic, just my anecdotal observations. If the shit really hit the fan, I think I'd rather enjoy being a high school advanced math/computer science teacher. Aren't school districts hurting for qualified people in those positions?

Mod parent up... I totally fall into the same category... I don't spend money on apps (aside from some really useful utility apps that are no more than $2) and try to entertain myself with the Lite games. While I'm sure there is a burgeoning class of iPhone owners that are in the "can't yet legally drive" demographic who go ape-poopy over new iPhone games, for the most part it's a nice living if you can make it but nothing to write home about.

I agree that this is a risky venture... Though, at least they're trying new ideas and bringing everything to the table when they do... For one thing it could backfire - driving customers away from their service. Is it like America across the pond where many municipalities allow broadband providers a legal monopoly? And won't this further blur the line between content providers and internet providers? Will this subscription service be optional? What if I don't want the price of my bill inflated an extra $10 a month for the privilege of downloading music guilt free? What if I'm happy as a pig in shit with the current system (eg: morally bankrupt)?

Now, if you do have problems with piracy, might I suggest this alternative: by the Blu-ray disc, thus paying the content creator for their work, and then download a pirated copy. At least then you can still avail yourself of the rights (such as format shifting) that they're trying to take away from you. Of course, this still rewards the content creators, thus encouraging further attempts to restrict your use of the material you bought with your hard-earned cash...

Would you feel morally justified in buying the DVD and downloading the Blu-Ray? It might send the message to them that DVD is worth more to consumers than these latest shenanigans.
