I agree... I'm one of the few home-grown grad-students here. It can be tough keeping up with some of the bright international students, but it makes more sense in the long run to keep the smart people here (hopefully, we can outbreed the people who voted for Bush). Having smart people in the country will do way more than any economic stimulus, tax rebates, or what have you. Here's an article about the perils of protectionism during the first great depression http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/time/id/17606.htm .

Submission + - SkeptiCamp - BarCamp for Science Geeks (barcamp.org)

Reed writes: "For those of us who are fascinated by conventional science as well as its fringes and abuses, we introduce a new breed of BarCamp.

The mix of attendees at SkeptiCamp is expected to include both professionals and laypersons, all leading talks on the topics they love related to science and any extraordinary claim which can be tested. That latter includes the paranormal, alternative medicine, cryptozoology, creationism, UFOs, etc.

The 'skepti' in SkeptiCamp is to emphasize a respect for critical thought, reliable evidence and the many traps of faulty reasoning. It should not be construed to be a blanket rejection of the weird.

The first such event will be in Denver later this Summer, coincidentally the same weekend as the second SciFoo, an invite-only science-themed offshoot of Tim O'Reilly's FooCamp.

SkeptiCamp is unaffiliated with any organization and embraces the ideals, rules and social protocols of BarCamp."
