Tell me about it. I have the choice of Crapcast, Qwest dialup (because 10 years to fix the reason my local neighborhood can't get dsl, but residences to the north, south, east and west are all able to), Hughes, and Clear wireless are my options. I almost went to clear, but after looking at thier support forums... well.

Submission + - Unemployed playstation owner goes aggro. (msn.com)

Ardx writes: When Darren Suchon used a car as a battering ram against another car driven by his girlfriend, Colleen Frable, it wasn't a simple case of road rage, or love gone awry.

It was a crime of passion: for his PlayStation, that his live-in girlfriend had taken in anger over all the time her unemployed beau was spending on it instead of trying to find a job.

In a last ditch attempt to get him off the couch and onto a productive path, she took the PlayStation to work Friday.

Bad move.

Only if the vehicle is controlled purely by an AI would I ever expect to see personal atmospheric flying vehicles. Take a drive on most major freeways and look at the average driver cutting off and otherwise not allowing for others on the road. Now take a look at some of the major transportation routes of places like India and ask yourself if YOU would want to have people like that in that third dimension around you?

One thing that came to mind was maybe putting together some presents for the girl's future birthday and christmas that are picked out by you and your wife, sort of to keep her memory alive. That being said, voice recordings, images, and video will keep her image and sound, but the crucial thing as I see it, is to keep her personality and wisdom. It's more the content than the delivery. Future proofing for 20 years really isn't as dire (imho) as most people make out. You should be fine with current formats and only replicating copies of the formats down the line. Basically, follow the typical backup storage philosophy of multiple onsite and offsite storage and you should be fine as far as technology goes.

I always thought that zip discs were prone to self-destructing from exposure to a light breeze or a slightly disrespectful glance, but then maybe if they really were as bad as I remember nobody would've actually used them.

That was always my experience as well. The drives were about as bad as well. At least the cables make for a nice parallel jtag cable.

98 or so was the year I left out a floppy drive from my latest build. A CD-R may have been 'expensive' but not a CD-RW. I certainly owned a drive or two that if it came down to it, I could have installed but that never happened. As to purchasing a floppy, that was pointless. The 5 or 6 boxes in my garage with various 3.5/5.25/8 inch floppys were collecting enough dust. (Heck, still are actually) Ahh... floppys... *hands start shaking* *eye twitch* Damn... now I need to go dig out my old ][+ and play some apple panic and grab a hole punch and some tape.

You will note that there has been no detonation of nuclear weapons in war in the 65 years since.

I don't know that I would attribute the lack of use of the nuclear arsenal to the horror of it's use in WWII as much as to the mutually assured destruction that would have resulted from the use of them in subsequent wars/actions. As we move on to a more widespread availability of nuclear weapons (both of conventional and the 'dirty bomb' style), the nationless states gain an advantage in that they have no homeland to retaliate against and thus nullifying MAD's ability to ensure the world's safety.

Submission + - Bill Gates May Build Small Nuclear Reactor

Hugh Pickens writes: "The Wall Street Journal reports that TerraPower, an energy start-up backed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is in discussions with Toshiba Corp. to develop a small-scale nuclear reactor that would represent a long-term bet to make nuclear power safer and cheaper. Toshiba confirmed it is in preliminary discussions with TerraPower, a unit of Intellectual Ventures, a patent-holding concern partially funded by Gates and Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Ohmori says the two sides are talking about how they could collaborate on nuclear technology although discussions are still in early stages and that nothing has been decided on investment or development. TerraPower has publicly said its Traveling Wave Reactor could run for decades on depleted uranium without refueling (PDF) or removing spent fuel from the device. The reactor, the company has said, could be safer, cheaper and more socially acceptable than today's reactors. Gates's recent focus on nuclear power has been fueled by an interest in developing new power systems for developing countries where he says that new energy solutions are needed to combat climate change. Terrapower faces a lengthy, multi-year process to get its “traveling wave” reactor concept reviewed by regulators but if TerraPower succeeds in advancing its plans, it could provide an alternative blueprint for the nuclear industry at a time when new reactors may be coming online."
