Not new, but not very common. I suppose that it's mainly the large harddrives that push for this to get out to the mainboards..
I've seen this in a few places, why is pf preferred over iptables? What can it do that iptables cannot? Or is it performance related? Security?

To begin with 99% of commercial games don't even have a Linux version, so there's nothing to sell to Linux gamers.
The same could be said of Macs. Part of what made Steam viable on the Mac was Valve porting a number of their games over to the Mac. And they could do it again for Linux if they wanted to...

Per-application volume control is typically a sound system option; supported through Vista, Windows 7, Pulse Audio, OSS, and I assume OSX. Putting a volume control in the application itself would be redundant at this point.
