Comment I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned DBP (Score 2) 510

DarkBasic Pro doesn't have line numbers. DOES have functions. Add-on libraries. It's compiled, free, and high on the instant gratification scale. With a bit of work, (less than just about any other language I can think of off hand,) it can be used to create games that contemporary kids would actually recognize as the sort of games they play.

Submission + - NYC MetroCard to be replaced by MTA card (nydailynews.com)

DancesWithRobots writes: "The MTA has announced that MetroCards will be replaced by a new contactless system.

In a few years, subway riders could be able to open turnstiles with the tap of a credit card — or with a new pass they're calling the MTA Card, the Daily News has learned. Straphangers also will be able to establish travel accounts and transfer money via home computers or the nearest automatic bank machine.

Further down the road, the technology could also allow the MTA to charge different rates on a daily or hourly basis — like rush hour or weekends,"

Genghis Khan, History's Greenest Conqueror 279

New research suggests that in addition to being one of history's cruelest conquerors, Genghis Khan may have been the greenest. It is estimated that the Mongol leader's invasions unintentionally scrubbed almost 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere. From the article: "Over the course of the century and a half run of the Mongol Empire, about 22 percent of the world's total land area had been conquered and an estimated 40 million people were slaughtered by the horse-driven, bow-wielding hordes. Depopulation over such a large swathe of land meant that countless numbers of cultivated fields eventually returned to forests. In other words, one effect of Genghis Khan's unrelenting invasion was widespread reforestation, and the re-growth of those forests meant that more carbon could be absorbed from the atmosphere." I guess everyone has their good points.

Seller of Counterfeit Video Games Gets 30 Months 165

wiredmikey writes "The FBI reported this week that Qiang 'Michael' Bi, of Powell, Ohio was sentenced to 30 months in prison for selling more than 35,000 illegally copied computer games over the Internet between 2005 and 2009. According to a statement of facts read during Bi's plea hearing, agents executed a search warrant at Bi's house and found multiple CD duplicators and more than 1,000 printed counterfeit CDs. Some of the CDs were still in the duplicator. During their investigation, agents learned that Bi would buy a single copy of a game, illegally duplicate it and sell the copies on eBay.com and Amazon.com. He also set up a website for customers to download the games they bought. Bi accepted payment through eBay and PayPal accounts in his name and in others' names."

US Embassy Categorizes Beijing Air Quality As 'Crazy Bad' 270

digitaldc writes "Pollution in Beijing was so bad Friday the US embassy, which has been independently monitoring air quality, ran out of conventional adjectives to describe it, at one point saying it was 'crazy bad.' The embassy later deleted the phrase, saying it was an 'incorrect' description and it would revise the language to use when the air quality index goes above 500, its highest point and a level considered hazardous for all people by US standards. The hazardous haze has forced schools to stop outdoor exercises, and health experts asked residents, especially those with respiratory problems, the elderly and children, to stay indoors."

You know. . .People will do what they please for fun. For some it's wandering around a virtual world chatting with friends, and making homes, gadgets, vehicles and clothing for fun and/or profit. For others it's reading articles on a news blog and arguing about it. *shrug* Takes all kind's I guess.
