Comment Stopped Evolving (Score 1) 398

I see where Hawking is coming from and I guess that he's right if you accept his new use of the word evolution, which is fine. But in the classic Darwinian sense I would argue that humans have STOPPED evolving. Our weak and stupid are allowed (rightfully i suppose) to live simply because we have created a civilization to support each other (in most countries). There is seldom any real natural selection in the traditional sense since the weak (whatever your definition of that might include) live on and most likely will breed along with all the strong. You could argue the Idiocracy point of view that we are "devolving" based on the same kind of argument but I wouldn't take it that far... yet.

Please don't patronize me, I know the history of democracy.

Just because you invented it doesn't mean you perfected it.

And don't presume to know anything about me based off of my one sentence attempt at humor above. I just got back to the states after 3 years living in Germany (US Army), I have a very realistic picture of both your countries and mine, so please stop stereotyping Americans as I'm sure you hate it when American's do it about you.

Its not totally wrong.

FTA: "While Ryskinâ(TM)s research looks only at long-term changes in the Earthâ(TM)s magnetic field, he points out that, âoeIf secular variation is caused by the ocean flow, the entire concept of the dynamo operating in the Earthâ(TM)s core is called into question: there exists no other evidence of hydrodynamic flow in the core.â"

He does go so far to say that there is no examinable proof of a liquid core and that we could have been wrong all these years.

It doesn't seem too far fetched for me, but I'll leave the proof to the geomagnetism community.

Let me tell you about houses full of crap. Multiple sets of all the armors, weapons, and huge amounts of reagents all laid out on the floor in neat grids.

Oh god I've been there man. I had all the armor sets laid out neatly by the metal, hundreds of potions nicely lined up on the shelves. I even had a special alchemy corner with all the Master potion making shit and barrels full of all the ingredients that I had been collecting since i started.

Now I look back and wonder what the hell I was thinking (just like I do with WoW and EQ) but it was funny how satisfied I was just hoarding shit in that game. I kept my in-game house cleaner and more organized than anywhere I've lived since then. Maybe if I start accumulating tons of weapons and armor I'll be motivated to clean up my place so I can display it all. =P

Submission + - Super Laser Unveiled Today in California (yahoo.com)

Gravedigger3 writes: "A US weapons lab on Friday pulled back the curtain on a super laser with the power to burn as hot as a star. The National Ignition Facility's main purpose is to serve as a tool for gauging the reliability and safety of the US nuclear weapons arsenal but scientists say it could deliver breakthroughs in safe fusion power.

"We have invented the world's largest laser system," actor-turned-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said during a dedication ceremony attended by thousands including state and national officials.

NIF is touted as the world's highest-energy laser system. It is located inside the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory about an hour's drive from San Francisco. Equipment connected to a house-sized sphere can focus 192 laser beams on a small point, generating temperatures and pressures that exist at cores of stars or giant planets.

NIF will be able to create conditions and conduct experiments never before possible on Earth, according to the laboratory."
