Comment Just used my coupons (Score 1) 147

I ordered mine right after the story about the lack of coupons showed up. I got my coupons a few weeks later. Went and used them last week at Circuit City. Most everything in the store was gone except around 100 Guitar Hero games and 2 pallets full of DTV converter boxes. With the going out of business prices, the cost of each converter box was less than $40!

Submission + - Roku Player Adds Amazon VOD Support

Pseudo Idol writes: Roku has rolled out support for Amazon's Video on Demand service. This allows you to link your Roku player to your Amazon account and purchase/rent movies and television shows. The prices are the same as they are on Amazon's website. The selection is large, containing video from all the major networks. The large selection makes it somewhat difficult to browse easily in my opinion. I wonder what the chances of a Hulu channel are now that Roku and Amazon have partnered? Seeing as how I can watch the latest episodes of 24 on Hulu for free while they cost $1.99 through Amazon.

I know it doesn't have native support under Linux, but it runs using WINE. I haven't had any hangups recently since version 3 came out. Version 2 had some problems with FTP that would cause it to crash out.

My favorite editor recently has been EditPlus. It has syntax highlighting for a number of languages, can open multiple documents at once with tabs, built-in FTP support, backup options, and many more options. As a PHP programmer for a small company it worked well for the projects I was working on. I also have it set as my default text editor on my home pc.

You've obviously never used Verizon DSL. Their system requires a login/password which is generated via their Windows-only software when you're setting things up. Once you have that you no longer need Windows to connect to the internet, but you do need to that once to get the system & modem set up.

I did an Ubuntu install on a neighbor's computer a couple years back with Verizon DSL. Although it required calling tech support to get some manual settings, the thing was easy to setup without using the Windows-only CD.

Also FTFA:

Verizon says it will dispatch a technician to try to assist her accessing the internet without using the Windows-only installation disk. Verizon says its high-speed internet does indeed support Ubuntu, but some advanced features and installation disks clearly don't work with Linux.

So did this woman ever even call Verizon to get tech support before calling the news? Even calling some tech-savy high school student would have solved her problems a lot easier.

* "I'm thinking of switching from a soft toothbrush to a medium-soft. How has that worked out for you?"
* "I'm considering moving my sock drawer from the top right to the top left drawer. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of each arrangement?
* "We're moving to a new home and are having a family meeting this Thursday to evaluate hanging toilet paper so that the next sheet is over versus under on the roll. I was wondering how other readers have approached this decision?"
* "I'd like to set my USB to automount to a fixed drive letter when I plug it into my Windows XP laptop. I'm considering J:, P:, and possibly Q:. What do you all think? Should I look at M: as well?"

Now seriously I have come into contact with all of these questions in the past 6 months. Let me also add my opinion on such matters.

1. Medium-soft tooth brushes are not ADA approved. Stick with the soft.
2. I recently moved my sock drawer to the top right and I could not be happier. I also recently switched from tighty whiteys to briefs and would recommend them highly. Those are kept in my top left drawer.
3. I recently moved to a new home, all bathrooms have the toilet paper hung in an over-the-top fashion. I am the man of the house and will not have my toilet paper hung any other way.
4. I felt something was missing when floppies were no longer needed. I mount mine as the B: drive. Also consider T: for Thumdrive, U: for USB or F: for Flash. Avoid Q: at all costs.

But person B would need to know which songs person A has purchased and the date they were purchased. If a bunch of songs show up on a p2p site with my email in, I think it would be relatively easy to prove that they weren't mine by comparing it with the database of purchases that Apple keeps.

I also agree. The DRM in the iTunes store made me switch to Amazon's mp3 store. When I purchase music, I want to be able to put it on whatever media device I see fit. I applaud Apple for dropping the DRM. So what if they put the name of who purchased the song in the file. I have more freedom with my media. This also entices me to start using the iTunes store for my media purchases again.

Submission + - Passwords Given 5th Amendment Protection (securitycatalyst.com)

Pseudo Idol writes:
A recent ruling[pdf] has once again demonstrated how technology continues to challenge traditional legal frameworks leading to different court rulings. In a controversial case, a federal magistrate in Vermont held that the 5th Amendment's right against self-incrimination protected a man charged with the transportation of child pornography.

Sebastian Boucher was arrested while crossing the border from Canada into the United States. When asked if there was any child pornography, Boucher claimed that he wasn't sure since he downloaded pornography from online newsgroups and then transferred them onto his computer. Border agents continued to search the drive and eventually were able to locate actual videos and pictures containing child pornography. They then placed Boucher under arrest and subsequently shut down the laptop. One week later, the government tried accessing the files only to realize that the drive was encrypted with PGP, thereby making it impossible to access the files without knowing the password.

In a recent Slashdot article the government contended that it was legal to search laptops that enter the country. Can the government force Boucher to give up the password? His attorneys argue that forcing their client to reveal the password is a violation of his 5th Amendment rights against self-incrimination. This proves that a little encryption can go a long way.
