Kids Score 40 Percent Higher When They Get Paid For Grades Screenshot-sm 716

A large number of schools participating in a pay-for-grades program have seen test scores in reading and math go up by almost 40 percentage points. The Sparks program will pay seventh-graders up to $500 and fourth-graders as much as $250 for good performance on 10 assessment tests. About two-thirds of the 59 schools in the program improved their scores by margins above the citywide average. "It's an ego booster in terms of self-worth. When they get the checks, there's that competitiveness -- 'Oh, I'm going to get more money than you next time' -- so it's something that excites them," said Rose Marie Mills, principal at MS 343 in Mott Haven. Critics, who are unaware that most college students don't become liberal arts majors, argue that paying kids corrupts the notion of learning for education's sake alone.

Oh, if I had mod points I'd give one to you, because what you say is completely true. I've lived some of that discrimination and predisposition against me for being a woman in the math and physics fields. Of course I like to prove everybody wrong so if I have to work twice as much to achieve that, I'll do it just to rub their own words in their faces. I think that's what has motivated me the most when it comes to science. Science itself is very interesting to me, but proving everybody wrong is priceless :).

And I always thought that females were conditioned by society to not to be interested in the hard science fields. I have yet to see how much influence does environment and culture have, compared to the fact of having a XX chromosome, when it comes to math.

I don't think we're past the "age of the subscription based MMO" at all. There are alternatives of course, like playing for free, but if you want upgrades, you pay for them, or things like that, but we still have to pay for the entertainment, don't we?

My guess would be that several MMOs have been shut down cause they just can't compete with the top ones in the genre. Players will always compare. And one game might be fun at the beginning, but will it last 2, 3, 4, or more years? I see that UO is still up there, and damn that game is old. But is still entertaining, because it has something unique to offer than others MMO don't. You just can't make an online RPG that looks like all others and expect gamers to stay. The MMO industry needs some creativity.

chronic bitterness poisons a person's health in many ways, but often it needs outside impulses to break the feedback loop.

I completely agree with you on that. Usually problems like bitterness and depression are affected by a constant negative loop that they can't break through. Giving them a way to stop it and look at things in a different way makes things much better. But I'm still not quite sure that drugs are the answer to that.

Rape and prostitution are VERY different things. A robot could perform prostitution and not be against ethics, cause you're not "diminishing" a human, you're just using a robot (or an oversized specialized toy if you wanna see it that way) for sex. Now, if a robot performs a rape, it means it's damaging a human, and that is NOT acceptable.

I'm not into cutting myself /emo - What will happen when my Fem-bot and your Jackman 'bot elope? Mutant Cylons? I have the theory that robots might be able to create "new life" by mixing their codes. But they still need a "shell". When robots starts building robots for their own purposes (instead what we have now that robots build robots for OUR purposes), we can say we can get robot "offsprings". And who knows what will they be - How will the ratio of 'bots' sexes reflect the general population? I don't know, but not only geek girls will want male bots for "entertainment". Ever saw A.I.? I remember Jude Law as a robot gigolo. I think a lot of women would pay for that :P
