Privatunes Anonymizes iTunes Plus 176

njondet writes "French-law.net reports that Ratatium.com, a French website specialized in technology news and software downloads, has just launched Privatunes, a free software that anonymizes DRM-free files bought on iTunes Plus. Last month's revelations that the DRM-free files sold by EMI on iTunes Plus came with user's full name and account e-mail embedded in them had raised serious privacy concerns. Ratatium.com explains (in French) that Privatunes is aimed at guaranteeing the privacy of users but also their rights as consumers to freely share and trade the songs they have purchased. However, the claim that this software is perfectly legal will surely be tested."

Submission + - Major Bug Found in Security Products

ancientribe writes: A stealthy and potentially dangerous bug has been discovered in security products from eight different vendors, including Check Point Software, according to an article in Dark Reading. The so-called cross-site request forgery (CSRF) lets an attacker access the user's network and even conduct transactions on behalf of the user. It could affect over a million installations, but so far, Check Point is the only security vendor to step up and patch it.
Even more scary is that this vulnerability is found in most everything with a Web-based interface, including printers, firewalls, DSL routers, and IP phones.

Submission + - Cowpea viruses + quantum dots = memory (newscientisttech.com)

holy_calamity writes: Rewritable memory made from cowpea viruses and semi-conductor qunatum dots has been demonstrated by a group from University of California Irvine, New Scientist tells us. It is possible to pack huge amounts of the tiny nanostructures into a small space but they have never been used to make memory before. A touch of biology does the trick. Each dot/virus hybrid has high and low conducting states that can function as memory.

Submission + - Anti-Piracy Outfit Tries to Shut Down Demonoid

Ernesto writes: "The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a lawsuit against Demonoid's ISP Leaseweb in which they demand that the site will be taken offline.

This the the fist time that BREIN takes on one of the bigger BitTorrent sites. Last week they won a lawsuit against Leaseweb in a similar case. In this case the Amsterdam court decided that Leaseweb had to take down the BitTorrent site everlasting.nu and hand over the name and address of the owner. Additionally, Leaseweb was forced to take down everlasting.nu, in case the site returns in the near future."

Submission + - How Windows Vista can be crashed

Manu Stanley writes: "How To Crash Windows Vista In 10 Seconds Or Less
Posted by Alexander Wolfe

Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system is a mighty paradox. On the one hand, it's more robust and feature-rich than any of its predecessors. For the most part, it's also more secure and is immune to many pretty sophisticated takedown attempts. But it's got one nasty Achilles' Heel, which'll enable you to crash the OS in under 10 seconds.

Here's the deal: One of the simplest command sequences you can think of will take Vista down completely. Hold down the Windows key and the letter "E" for 10 seconds or so. After opening up Windows Explorer windows ad infinitum, your system will stop responding.

Equally useful (maybe more useful) is little-known process to repair bad boot sectors. Called Bootrec, it's an update of something that was previously available on XP."

Submission + - Protect Privacy Online Using Secret Identity (akacard.com)

techna writes: "A new credit card is in the works that offers users an alternative identity, including name, address, credit card number, CVV and exp date to protect their privacy online. Several racy uses have been suggested for the card but generally it's best for avoiding new account fraud- the bad kind where the carders take your name, SSN, bday and start a new life in FL. The card is launched but under the radar for now. There are a few blogs on it and a few articles on the website too. http://www.akacard.com/"

Submission + - Seagate Meets the Terabyte

WMIF writes: Seagate today finally marks its long-awaited entry into the one-terabyte drive arena.

Manufactured around a 4-platter design (as opposed to the 5 platters found in the already-shipping Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000), the new drive will be available as a consumer oriented unit, the Barracuda 7200.11, and an enterprise-targeted Barracuda ES.2.

With this new generation Seagate makes the leap to a 32-megabyte buffer, an increase bound to elevate the firm's performance to a new level.

An anonymous reader writes: Recent scientific publications have reported either inceasing or decreasing ice volumes on the Antarctic continent, and while this would seem to suggest considerable scientific uncertainty on the issue, new research summarized at http://www.ecoenquirer.com/antarctic-ice.htm suggests that both findings might be true at the same time.

Submission + - GTAIV trailer irks NYC mayor

UnanimousCoward writes: Several sources including this GameSpot article note that the new Grand Theft Auto IV trailer (which depicts "Liberty City" with familiar NYC landmarks) has drawn comments from NYC Mayor Bloomberg ("The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers") as well as the NYC police commissioner.
