Archaeologists at Chicago's Oriental Institute have discovered what seems to be an ancient gold-processing and panning camp along the Nile River. It is thought to have been operated by the Kushites, and to have been the source of ancient Egypt's gold.

Gilberto Gil, the man responsible for Brazil's Ministry of Culture and one of the top-level Brazilian government officials is an example to be followed. He has made it his duty to fight draconian copyright laws: "Digital culture brings with it a new idea of intellectual property, and this new culture of sharing should inform government policies."
He has been been advocating the use of the Creative Commons license for a while now, and needless to say, the recording companies aren't happy.

Saper Law Offices, the same Chicago law firm that has been mentioned here twice before for their successes against the RIAA, has posted a blog article on the legal issues surrounding software development. The article, titled "Five Things Every Software Developer Should Know", gives a concise but informative legal tutorial on patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Definitely a must-read for anybody involved in a small or personal business doing software development.

Here's a little episode from the money-makes-the-world-go-round department. Google on Monday announced an alternative Google Checkout party with free food & massages at the side of an eBay event — likely to lure away sellers (Checkout is a competitor to eBay-owned PayPal):
Are you an online seller attending eBay Live! in Boston this week? If so, join us for a celebration of user choice at the Google Checkout Freedom Party on Thursday night
This didn't bode so well with eBay, who, according to Valleywag, reacted by withdrawing AdWords ads on Google. And now, in a new blog post Google says that after "speaking with officials at eBay, we ... agreed that it was better for us not to feature this event." (The post doesn't elaborate on the reasons, except that Google "did not want to detract from" the eBay Live event — as often with official company blogs, they hide more than they reveal when it comes to sensitive issues.)

ABC is reporting that a launch of a scramjet rocket from Woomera in Australia today appears to have been successful. From the article "Steve Butler from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation says, after two days of delays, the launch was a beautiful sight.
"It was quite awe-inspiring. From where we were standing we saw a bright yellow flash and then the rocket lifted-off," he said."

Finkelstein, son of holocaust survivors and outspoken critic of oppressive Israeli policy in Palestine, has come under attack from detractors like Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who seeks to silence critics of Israel and has successfully interfered in internal DePaul tenure processes. Despite being in the midst of their hectic finals-week and upcoming graduation, student leaders are currently sacrificing their time by occupying the Executive Offices of DePaul University indefinitely until their demands for the tenure of Professors Finkelstein and Larudee are met.
