Using his laptop computer, Yee earned the math equivalent of an Olympic medal for calculating the Euler-Mascheroni Constant to more that 116 million decimal places, shattering the old record of 108 million. DebNY writes: The rapid rise of Web video and broadband net access "may overwhelm some of the Internet's backbones" in 2007, while "ISPs may struggle to keep pace with demand." So says a study from the Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) group at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. But reports of the Internet's imminent demise are greatly exaggerated, says Ed Cone of CIO Insight. "An Internet that is broken or seriously impaired at its core would obviously be bad for business in all kinds of ways...but as in the case of the most notorious prognostication of impending disaster, made in 1995 by Ethernet co-inventor Robert Metcalfe, the doom seers seem likely to eat their words. In fact, the supply of available bandwidth, especially at the core of the net, looks healthier than the pessimists would have it — or even bother to support with hard numbers when pressed to defend their arguments."

Submission + - NASA Optimistic About Fuel Tank Repairs

DarkNemesis618 writes: "NASA is now optimistic Atlantis' fuel tank will be able to be repaired in Florida. Due to a freak hail storm February 26 that had golf-sized hail chunks raining down on the launchpad put several thousand dings in the foam covering the external fuel tank as well as damaging 28 tiles on Atlantis' wing. 20 of the 28 tiles have been repaired and workers have started sanding down the damaged area of the tank itself. After it was decided that Atlantis needed to return to the VAB, NASA was unsure as to whether or not the tank could be repaired. But after bringing it back and doing more extensive inspections, the tank appeared to be in good enough shape that repairs could be done on the spot and a replacement was not necessary. This will allow for Atlantis to be launched late April for its construction mission to the ISS as well as not interfering with the remaining 4 launches planned this year. If the tank needed to be replaced, Atlantis would not have launched until June at the earliest."

WSJdpatton writes to mention that legislators are taking a look at a new driving offense, DWT — Driving While Texting. Sparked by an increase in accidents related to the use of an electronic devices, this is just the latest in a string of "distracted driving" laws that are being entertained. "Some wireless industry supporters argue that statutes barring texting while driving are too specific. What is needed, they say, is not narrowly focused legislation, but a campaign to educate the public about all driver distractions. In Washington, D.C., an industry lobby group called CTIA -- The Wireless Association has begun tracking legislation, including Ms. McDonald's bill, and scratching out a strategy to counter it."

Angelica writes: Microsoft has just released Windows XP x64 SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 to the general public. Both of these service packs have been in closed beta for the good part of the past year, and dozens of bugfixes, new features, and most importantly, security updates. It's currently available in English and German, with more languages on the way.
