Comment Former IT guy turned sailor (Score 2, Insightful) 176

I thought the cloud was a dumb idea back when I was doing IT. Why would you want to be reliant on 2 companies, your ISP and your cloud service provider, to do business? Why would you want to give big data access to your proprietary and customer data? Why would you want to get stuck paying whatever they asked, when they started raising prices on you down the road?

If you were still my customer, you'd be happy knowing that while your friends are paying big bucks to migrate off the cloud, your data never left. Of course, I wouldn't have made as much money as the people who got to charge you for 2 migrations, and then there's all that wasted heat and carbon.

They figured out that a lot of people don't ever bring grocery bags, so they keep buying the reusable bags, and they end up polluting the earth.

There are so many ways we can reduce pollution. Your cell phone could be designed to make the battery last longer, but that isn't as profitable. same for notebook batteries. It's all about profit and greedy people. I live on the ocean. When you see a rich person pull in to a remote anchorage in a mega yacht, running generators 24-7 to power the water maker, lights, toys, etc, and they have this big yacht for 2-4 people, and you see the pollution they create, you realize that's only half of it. They have another big yacht that follows them around with all their toys on it. So many things are made just to be disposable that don't need to be, but it's more profitable that way. They're making cars like cell phones now, designed to last 3-4 years of payments, then get a new one. Until we design things that are good for people, instead of profit, we're doomed.

I figure they spy on how I use their Photo Editor and then incorporate features based on my use for their paying customers. (I am a professional photographer)

If you upload all your photos to their cloud services, that allows them to train AI off your photos, mine your photos for location and friend data, etc. No thanks, I'll back up my photos to my computer myself.

I love the look on people's faces when they ask if they can vendmo or paypal me money and I tell them "No." Either find another way to pay me or go away. I don't do business with thieves, I don't care how many of your friends are ok with their abuse.

A sad attempt at trying to improve functionality. People want computers as a tool. We don't want to rent it from you, we don't want you spying on us, watching what we do, seeing if there's some way you can turn it in to profit for yourself.

If you make a good tool, you will be profitable. If you want to just control and squeeze people, you're only going to get the stupid people to go along with that.
