Comment There's no energy crisis (Score 1) 517

"There is no energy crisis because I can generate my own"

Right-wing, radical freedom and independence, states rights, end-of-the-world survavalists should be embracing generation of their own energy, if they are serious about independence from corporations, monopolies, etc. It's nearly impossible to create your own gas, but electricity is comparatively easy to generate.

The military is quite right-wing, but they are just practical when it comes to generating power.

Sir, your password recovery procedure is running according to plan and on schedule, sir, any other instructions?

Comment Resetting passwords not that easy. (Score 1) 381

I bought a used manageable switch with no password. I had to find the documentation, specs, build its proprietary serial cable, access the console, only then did I find the funky odd way to reset its passwords.

Quite a few passwords are not for windows, and require a lot of additional work to reset. All those simple routers on the market are very widely used. They don't reset the router access password, they reset the entire router. The SSID, WPA/wifi password, dhcp, all configurations, messing up the network.

The time required to reset all the passwords is precious time lost and creates additional problems. By now you are being called messy and irresponsible all over the place. The responsible thing is to find a good and secure way to store, document, and transmit the passwords when needed. Then reset them and re-document them. Which is a pain.

That's what I have. Pretty much every cybercafe has deep freeze. It works perfectly, uses basically no ram, there is no slowdown. Turned off all autoupdates, removed the antivirus. Box never changes anything, boots the same every time. Occasionally I disable it and update all the stuff, but it generally runs somewhat outdated versions. There will be crap infecting sometimes, but only until you reboot.

Freeze all system changes except saving into the the documents folder. There are a number of programs to do it, seems the most popular is Deep Freeze. It allows all system changes, but after reboot it is all gone. Some tweaking will allow making a few things persistent, such as the documents.

It's their own fault if Dell, HP, and friends created a business plan that depends on the entire population tossing out their computer within 24 months, and that no longer happens. Enough of this nonsense about planned obsolescence and waste being needed to "create jobs" or "help the economy". That's code for making people waste their money and resources.

The government can just print more money. Then those dollars go sit in some foreign bank account, so it doesn't affect inflation immediately. Then some electronic currencies appear, make national currencies worthless, and the whole financial world explodes. Then we go back to creating local neighborhood markets, planting food in the backyard, and trading based on barter because no money of any kind is trusted by anyone.
