Submission + - EU Wants to Tax Antennas for Wireless Internet

ahbi writes: from: http://www.brusselsjournal.com/

Olivier Maingain, the mayor of Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, one of the 19 Brussels boroughs, is planning to tax all "antennas for the transmission of data". Each antenna will be taxed a staggering 4,000 euros per year. Such antennas are used for WiFi or WLAN, i.e. wireless internet or wireless networks over relatively short distances. While the small antenna on your wireless router could theoretically be taxed, the new tax seems to target WiFi-antennas that can be seen from the outside, i.e. that are positioned on the outside of buildings. If the owner of the aerial cannot be identified the owners of the buildings have to pay the new tax.

Some Brussels boroughs are already taxing companies on the number of computer screens in their offices. The government of the Brussels Region, however, considers this tax so detrimental for business investments and for the image of the region, that it offers money to boroughs that do not levy the computer screen tax. Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe has 50,000 inhabitants. It is a wealthy residential neighbourhood, close to the NATO and EU headquarters, where many Eurocrats and American expats live.

Submission + - Apple's Needed Killer App?

Al Feldzamen writes: "Soon we will see the much publicized, but seriously deficient, Apple's iPhone. What that device truly needs to succeed, in view of its obvious disadvantages (high price, limitation to Cingular, small memory for music/video, lack of voice dialing, etc.) is a KILLER APP that would set it apart from the multitude of cell phones now available. Such an app could well be DICTATION SOFTWARE (since a microphone is already present, and a stripped down OS X to support a new application) . . . software that would let a user dictate an outgoing Email, or dictate text that could go into a rudimentary word processor (like TEXTEDIT), and thence to a memory file or, by any one of several means, to a printer if desired. Then that device, trademark issues permiting, could be informally renamed the POCKET MAC ! And that software could well also be incorporated into Apple's forthcoming new system, LEOPARD, to give it the boost needed to stand out as more than a slight improvement over the current operating system, TIGER !"

Submission + - David Pogue reviews the Apple TV

necro81 writes: David Pogue of the NY Times has devoted his weekly column to the newly released Apple TV. He also has a video blurb to go with it. He compares it to the XBox360 and Netgear's EVA8000, which also deliver content traditionally trapped in a PC onto a TV set. Apple TV Pros: setup is as easy as can be, it's small and silent form factor will be good for home theaters, and the interface and remote control are intuitive. Cons: HDTV only, playback is limited to formats playable within iTunes, and no internet functionality other than movie trailers.

Submission + - Antarctic melting and sea-level changes

ajs writes: "The recent reporting on sea-level changes has often made the leap from observed rising sea-levels to predicted rises in sea-levels to so-called "doomsday" scenarios without a great deal of context. A recent article about rising antarctic sea levels on Scientific American's site has a fairly good discussion of the three different measures and how they relate. It also points out that observations currently map to the upper-end of the, "18-59 centimeters (7-23 inches) this century," predicted by the IPCC, but that the primary concern is that this could lead to a sudden melting of much larger amounts of inland ice, and could result in changes of meters (100 million people live within a meter of sea-level) that are not accounted for in current estimates."

Submission + - TEMPEST, Conspiracy Theories and Tinfoil Dreams

Donald C. Donzal writes: "Prepare to strap that tinfoil hat on two notches below excruciating as Chris Gates, security mentor and course developer, dives into this topic with his usual zeal in his latest column for the Ethical Hacker Network. In short TEMPEST deals with "compromising emanations" or the fact that you can capture data from your computer, monitor, CAT5 cable going into your router, coax cable into your cable modem, and even your power cord without physical access. OK... maybe one more notch on that hat.

Submission + - HowTo: Play movies on your AppleTV sans conversion

brad-x writes: "Since the Apple TV is running MacOS X, it is possible to install arbitrary codecs and have it play. The following instructions save time by not requiring the user to transcode all their movies (and suffer the lossy conversion), but does involve some expertise. Read on for more.

If the story is approved please approve the one using .nyud.net:8080 as I forgot to include that in the first submission. Sorry. :("

Submission + - Ergonomic Software Eliminates Mouse Clicking

ThinSkin writes: "GentleMouse is an ergonomic software program that eliminates the need to click the mouse by translating cursor movements into mouse actions, providing an easy way to perform mouse actions without manually pressing buttons or scrolling. ExtremeTech's review of the GentleMouse provides an in-depth look of this unusual software and was quite pleased with its "intuitive interface, execution, and software options" but the software "cannot overcome issues in certain apps where clicking a mouse is essential, such as when gaming or designing graphics." Here's a video tutorial of the GentleMouse in action."

Submission + - Bill Gates to finally receive his Harvard degree

coondoggie writes: "It's not like he needs it to beef up his résumé, but the world's richest college dropout finally is getting his degree. Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, will speak at Harvard University's commencement ceremony in June and, like all commencement speakers, will receive an honorary degree from the institution. It's hard to guess if Gates, the wealthiest person in the world and co-founder of a company that brought in $44 billion in revenue last year, cares. But the programming whiz who once dropped out of Harvard will likely feel some sense of satisfaction. http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/032207-bill- gates-to-finally-receive.html"
Patents

Submission + - PTO Rejects Instant Live Patent

Jivecat writes: "Instant Live, a service of the concert promotion company Live Nation, makes recordings of live concerts that are rapidly burned onto CDs to be sold to the audience before they leave the venue. It's a nice service for fans, but Live Nation holds the patent for a technology that places markers between songs so they can be written as separate tracks rather than one big track — in effect giving them a monopoly on in-concert recordings. Now, thanks to the efforts of the EFF and a patent attorney, who found prior work of similar technology, the U.S. Patent Office has revoked Live Nation's patent. This is good news for those who consider Live Nation to be the Evil Empire when it comes to concert promotion."

Submission + - Linux on the desktop-problem solved!

An anonymous reader writes: It seems that Steven Goodwin (www.bluedust.com) has a really novel solution for Linux vs Dell vs the Desktop. He suggests packaging Linux as if it were a Mac, with custom hardware, and a specially built kernel. http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/node/2151 I can see this getting the old granny set, but it would kill off Linux if it ever came to pass.
