Submission + - Will Vista kill tech support?

Celsius10 writes: I make my living through freelance computer support, 99% of new calls are "My computer is running slow". After I clean their computer they almost always ask if I can do something else for them, and this tends to lead to more business and hopefully a longterm client. Obviously I am ecstatic that Microsoft is finally waking up and tightening the security belt with Vista, but I am very concerned that my business will eventually go the way of the buggy whip manufacturer once Vista becomes mainstream and the new calls stop coming in for virus and spyware related problems. I know my business will need to adapt or die but without that first contact of an infected computer, how will I attract new customers for services that they don't know they might need?

Submission + - Searching for The World's Tallest Trees with LIDAR

SoyChemist writes: The Save-the-Redwoods League is leading an effort to map all of Redwood National Park with light detection and ranging equipment. LIDAR simultaneously creates a 3D "point file" of the forest floor and canopy. Calculating tree heights is a simple matter of subtraction. Among other things, the maps will be used to locate immense redwood trees. Hyperion, the tallest known tree in the world, stands 378.1 feet tall and was recently discovered in that same park. The conservationists believe that they will find even taller trees. Wired is running a story that includes pictures and details about the twin-engine 1968 Aero Commander and the LIDAR equipment. Perhaps the coolest thing about this is that all of the map data will be released into the public domain.

Submission + - Zap2It Labs Closing Its Doors (zap2it.com)

keller999 writes: Zap2It Labs, the episode listing provider for MythTV, has decided to close its doors. The following notice is posted on their homepage.

For several years we have offered a free TV listings service to hobbyists for their own personal, noncommercial use. In October of 2004 we posted here an open letter saying the future of Zap2it Labs was at risk because of certain growing misuses of the Zap2it Labs data. Unfortunately this misuse has continued and grown. These misuses, combined with other business factors have led to the decision to discontinue Zap2it Labs effective September 1, 2007.
There is a running discussion about this on the mythtv-users mailing list.

Submission + - How-To: Solve Ubuntu Wireless Problems (osweekly.com)

tobydecker writes: "Here's an interesting story. Are you having Ubuntu wireless problems? You may have no choice but to replace your notebook, at least according this article. "Speaking for myself, as someone who may be familiar with Linux, but values his time, my next notebook will be pre-installed with the distro of my choice. See, as much fun as it can be to enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done, once everything is working as you want it to, I have less time to spare than I used to. So this means that changes in how my time is spent have to be considered here. Besides that, I can also take some level of solace in knowing that I will not have to deal with the hair pulling experience of trying to determine why WiFi works with one release of a particular distro and not with another; this becomes the reseller's problem, as part of the provided extended support program."

Submission + - Free Lawyers for RIAA victims

An anonymous reader writes: I was wondering if the community could actually fund lawyers for every single one of the victims of RIAA law suits? How much would it cost? I thought it would be nice if they always had a fight on their hands.
