Submission + - http://www.quantenblog.net/physics/work-heat (quantenblog.net)

hweimer writes: "The question how ideas from classical physics may be incorporated into the quantum realm is a long-standing topic in theoretical physics. Together with some colleagues, I have written a paper describing how the concepts of work and heat turn out in quantum mechanics. As a result you get some remarkable things, like a machine that both works and does not at the same time, but this may also help towards a better understing of thermodynamic properties of quantum computers."

Submission + - Paraolympian Takes on Non-Disabled Runners (dailynews.co.za)

hweimer writes: "Oscar Pistorius is undoubtedly the world's fastest disabled sprinter. The international athletics organization IAAF is currently investigating the issue."

Submission + - Pirate Party Fails To Enter Swedish Parliament

hweimer writes: "Yesterday's election in Sweden didn't only end the reign of the Social Democrats but also saw the Pirate Party on the ballots for the first time. According to preliminary results the party did not reach the 4 per-cent mark required to enter parliament. Being listed under 'other parties' the exact percentage is still unknown, but the official results of some of the districts hint at a final result of about 0.6%."

Submission + - Personal Firewalls Mostly Useless?

hweimer writes: More and more security researchs come to the conclusion that personal firewalls are ineffective in controlling outbound traffic. An article in the Mail & Guardian online mentions a test that 'showed that the software often causes more problems than it solves. Not one of the six firewall programs the magazine tested, regardless of whether commercial or freeware, could prevent all attempts from the test programs at establishing outgoing connections between the PC and the internet.' Simple PoCs are available, too.
