There is a kind of irony there, that people who can't be bothered reading are so passionate about being able to buy words at the cheapest possible price.

Big ups for being one of the sensible ones here who are the kind of people that made this site popular.

I would also like to point out that there is an illegal printing industry as well, those items are printed without any permission from the publisher, so those would be black market items. Also in the case of textbooks there is explicit labeling on the products stating that it cannot be sold outside the designated region. I study distance education across regions, so I have this issue all of the time as the textbook I can buy at my local store is more than $100 bucks cheaper than the specified text from the region where the university is. Like everyone says, it isn't right and we are all hoping the rise of etextbooks will cancel all of this nonsense out like streaming (etc.) canceled out regionalism of DVDs.

Perhaps they got what I think they were hoping for, which was someone involved with creating the program giving them a tip.

By putting out a public call like that they created a forest of opinions from all over the internet, perfect for a tree that wanted to help but didn't want to get chopped down as a result.

Section 160 Criminal Justice Act 1988

Section 160 CJA 1988 covers the offence of possession of an indecent photograph of a child. There are four defences to this offence: three are listed in section 160(2) CJA 1988, Archbold 31 - 115, and one is listed in section 160A. Three of these defences are very similar to those that apply to some of the offences under section 1 PCA 1978, i.e. marriage, etc of a child aged 16 or 17, legitimate reason, and the defendant's lack of knowledge. The fourth defence, which is not found in the PCA 1978, is that the photograph or pseudo-photograph was sent to the defendant without any prior request made by him and he did not keep it for an unreasonable time.

The man in this case, reported the images so we can assume that he had a lack of knowledge until the point of discovery of images transfered to his machine without his prior request at which point he notified the police.

The law is not unreasonable, the people are.

Telstra services the mainstream market. Most of whom want traditional telephone services.

Most of the market for wired telephony have grown up with POTS and are comfortable with the technology. It is an always on service, the quality of service is consistent (at least when dialling locally), the user interface is easy to understand (lift handset to use) and it doesn't require a power supply to operate. Apart from the difficulties with using VoIP with emergency call (000 in Australia) geolocation, it requires a number of external services and user maintained devices to be operational.
If you understand that most of the customers that are more progressive in their attitude towards telephone simply don't have a POTS at all (and use their mobile phone), and that specific hardware is not required to utilize VoIP (skype is pretty popular) it does make more sense.

I like to bash telstra as much as anyone else, and iiNet is a good company, but this is misguided.

Some of these things seem rather complicated and use materials that aren't easy to obtain.

To provide greater benefit the machine should be able to be manufactured without specialized tools and be able to be built with universally available, preferably recyclable or re-purposed materials. If people can make a living out of making and servicing these toilets then the sanitary and economic (from the created industry) benefit will spread quickly and independently without requiring the oversight of a foreign NGO.
