Nokia didn't miss the smartphone market, they owned it with Symbian, and there was an upgrade path ahead with MeeGo. Their downfall came from the very top -- if it wasn't for M$-plant Stephen Elop and the suicidal move to Windows Phone, there's a good chance Nokia would still be the top handset maker.
As part of their deal with the devil, aka Microsoft, there's a non-compete clause -- Nokia can't make cell phones until 2016. Rumors are strong -- even thought they have to keep quiet for now -- that Nokia fully intends to come back to the handset business; the N1 tablet and Z Launcher are a solid hint of what's to come.
I am shocked and appalled.
And now they don't make phones.
But they do make a high-end Android tablet, and an unique Android launcher. Maybe this does not sound like much, but it is widely speculated that they will make Android phones in 2016. They are just waiting for the non-compete clause of their deal with the devil to run out.
And it would be a wise move, I believe. The Nokia brand is still incredibly strong in developing countries; it was only Windows Phone that poisoned their sales.
This one will be easier, Microsoft won't have to plant a trojan CEO to annihilate the company's market share first.
Dan Bunten (a name that old-school gamers may recognize) asked that after regretting his MtF transition. Couldn't he have expressed his feminine side without taking an extreme measure that turned his life into a wreck?
Cinnamon saved Gnome from itself.
Here's something I remember about OS/2. I had not actually used it back then, but I recall reading about how awesome it was, how it was much more advanced and reliable than Windows, and so on. But then I saw that IBM was selling PCs with Windows. Well, fuck: if even IBM would not throw their weight behind their own operating system, why would anyone support it?
But Windows is full of crap, and full of "If you can't make it work right, make it look good - Bill Gates" that it basically caused IT to be shit.
What was he talking about? Windows has never worked right, but it has never looked good either.
It was not even an operating system yet. It was just a graphical environment running on top of DOS.
iGadgets make you use iTunes and do that "sync" bullshit, instead of just copying the goddamn files, like you'd do with any sensibly designed device.
No, the golden rule is: if you have the gold, you make the rules.
Indeed, I still don't understand why anyone would want an Apple Watch.
I'm not religious, but this kind of shit only makes me think of that famous line: "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven."
Dinosaurs aren't extinct. They've just learned to hide in the trees.
